How many times? It's more like a constant. Everyone at work thinks I'm stone because my eyes are red because of the bugs. I really should get glasses. The smaller bugs are annoying but the bigger ones hurt a lot! I got hit by a bumblebee once and was left with a red eye for a couple of weeks.

I NEVER ride w/o either safety glasses or sunglasses. Sometimes its tough, fog up and/or sweat, but Sight is too precious to lose.

Sunglasses may help, but I hate when they crawl inside of your sunglasses and then creep into your eye. Or, you see this bug crawling on the inside of your glasses like a monster in a science fiction movie!!

Or, they get through your helmet vents and crawl in your hair. Ugh!

Consider getting some sunglasses that are like wraparounds or ski sunglasses-it's almost impossible for a bug to crawl into your sunglasses!

We've been having some bad problems with gnats in Chicago lately. Uuugh, I've been finding them all over the place lately, and I've taken to fully covering up before going on my rides because I hate seeing all those dead bugs stuck to my skin and matted around in my sweat. Uuugh!

Never have problems with my eyes, but unfortunately am a mouth breether more than a nose breether! Patooey!! Gotta agree with Koffee on the Gnats, never seen as many as we have around this year! Can't complain though since I usually ride by canals where Mosquitos could be a major problem but haven't been too bad!

Even with glasses, about once a week. Also one bee in the helmet and one yellowjacket down the jersey.

I ride up and down a small local river - with a very nice bike path, and the gnats are horrible. You go maybe 100' between major swarms... I end up with at least one in the eye and hundreds and I mean hundreds of dead ones in my hair, forehead, chest and back. The back is impressive - when I pull the zipper down on my jersey it opens up just enough air flow to the back that it sucks them in.... Kind of like roach motel - they check in but never leave.

Can't wait until the first frost when they all go to bug heaven, and I get to ride bug free...

I wear parolee glasses from Bolle. Wrap around type and that still doesn't help.

I have a pair of wraparounds that have a cloth frame and velcro on the back. I wrap them around my eyes tightly enough so that there's no free space for bugs to get in there- and I ride through swarms of gnats sometimes. I get them in my mouth, though, and that's no fun to hack up bugs either!

I always wear sunglasses even when it's cloudy, but I have eaten my fair share. :-)

I don't get many bugs in my eyes because of my wrap-around sunglasses but I do get quite a bit in my hair and stuck to the rest of me... especially when I'm riding near sunset. The ones I end up swallowing at least compel me to drink from the water bottle regularly. :D I started a thread a while back about estimating protien intake from the amount of bugs swallowed during rides but as one person who responded figured it, it probably wouldn't meet US RDA especially if one is cycling. I guess I will go back to the other thread and drool over reading about Joe's steak recipe. ;)

As others suggested. Sunglasses that are wraparound. I have clear lenses for dark lighting conditions that utilize the wraparound frame.. Guess that is worse than a bee in the mouth?

Just thought I would post a quick reply and recommendation on this thread.

I want to start off by saying I do not work for the company or receive any financial rewards for saying this. The best sunglasses I have found for riding a bike is something new called "BlueBlockers".

They have a unique wrap around head band which keeps them from falling off your face when you are bent over. They open up in the front at the nose piece. The nose piece is held together with a magnet. Besides being very practical for riding they are a great conversation piece.

Below is a website for the ones I am talking about.

Ouch... yes a few times... but once so badly that a wing part was stuck and could not be retrieved for a couple days until I actually went to an optomologist to have him get it out for me. It was terribly uncomfortable. I wear glasses now morning noon or night... sliders... with brown yellow and clear lenses.

I Always wear yellow lens. Helps me with sight and keeps bugs out my eyes. Sweat does pose a problem but that's a small price to pay.

I have swallowed my share of bugs, but never had one in the eye.

I wear glasses which may be why. Now dirt or dust is a different matter. Yesteray had dirt in both at the same time. Luckily cleared quickly without having to stop.

I have sunglasses with prescription inserts, bugs keep flying in between the lenses and I have to stop and evict them.

There are some kind of tiny black insects in the corn fields around here that are like riding through hail storms! Some times you will ride for miles and miles with these things pelting the crap out of you! I look like I have been peppered with a pepper mill!
Got the yellow jacket down the jersy last week, stung me, burned like fire!:(

I haven't had any bugs in my eyes since I always wear my sunglasses. I'm with the others, I've had more bugs in my mouth than I care to mention.

Can't recall any bugs in the eyes. I have been stung by a bee on the mouth while riding.

Used to be that you could tell an old pro racer by his permanently bloodshot eyes. Came from years of getting dirt and other road grit thrown into the eyes.

To keep bugs out of the helmet, i cut out slightly oversized pieces of scrap plastic window screening & superglue them to the inside of the intake vents. Works perfectly.

I ride with glasses about 95% of the time. I also, mostly catch them in my mouth. I just spit 'em out and keep going. Unless it's a June Bug. Them are good eatin'. :D

I have a pair of those I like them they work well I also use safety glasses when I am commuting they wrap around and take the gravel that gets kicked up well. Eating the dang things are what I tend to do the most. I am waiting for God to create the BBQ flavored gnat, or garlic flavored would be good too:D

If unwanted bug meals are your problem, try tying a homemade cheesecloth bandanna
over your lower face. Keeps the insects out, but doesn't impede breathing. A length of the same material around your neck as a scarf will keep the bugs out of your jersey.

I hate when I get hit by big bugs, like locusts, becuase they really leave a welt! I got hit right smack-dab in the bicep by one while I was going about 30, and i got a nice red mark there. also, it scared the living **** out of me, becuase it fluttered around in the eddy of air aaround my stomach for a bit before flying away, all the while, I was swerving all over the road, trying to get this 3 inch bug off of me!

Never. Always wear shields ("sun"glasses with a single lens)...
