Southern California - Guess who's moving to SoCal in a few months...

Yep....once the house sells and I no longer have ties to the ex, I am out of CT and heading west! I have sold or am in the process of selling off most all my stuff, and should be able to travel across the country with all my stuff in my VW Jetta :eek:. Well...except for my bed...my dad is gonna ship it out there for me. I have some bike stuff I'm selling that people should buy to help finance my trip out there :D

Anyway...

I am looking at the "suburbs" north of LA....like Burbank and that area. I kinda want to be close to the city, but definitely not in the city. Burbank seems like a good area from what I've seen....if anyone has pics and any info to share, that would be cool. I'm also looking at North Hollywood, which seems to be right next door....but Burbank looks like the winner so far.

I've wanted to move to CA ever since driving around the country (literally) back in 2002. Now that I've recently ended an 11 year relationship this past summer with my ex-gf, and then another one this past fall...I need a change, and once the house sells, there's no better time. It's been a rough few months to say the least. As it is, still have quite the uphill battle ahead of me, in that I need to pay a bunch of debt down before my ex will even SELL the house, not to mention then get it ready for sale (and hopefully it doesn't take forever to sell)....

Ughhhh....I don't even want to think about it.....

Anyway, so yeah....hopefully by April/May I will be out there. Maybe I'll even be back on my bike by then :rolleyes:

Burbank is very under-rated but it's location can't be beat and the area is full of surprises. Home prices are also 'reasonably stable' if you're looking to buy.

BUT keep in mind that downtown isn't really the center of it all.. there are probably 5-7 different hubs that exist within the 470 square miles we call Los Angeles- it'll take you quite a while to sort it out (I'm a local and I'll readily admit I haven't see it all).

Sorry to hear about the circumstances that are leading to your move, but at the same time these life-changing decisions can be the silver lining.

Anyway, my brother lives in Burbank and it does seem nice enough. The city is certainly close to some nice climbing. What I don't like about Burbank is that it often gets oppressively hot during the summer and the air quality in the valley is worse than most other areas.

My sister lives in Santa Monica which is still close to some good climbing but is generally pricier for rent, etc.

Happytime lives in the South Bay area, Manhattan Beach / Torrance area and that is close to Palos Verdes which gives you the opportunity to get to some climbing easily.

I live in Long Beach and you can ride to some decent climbing, such as Palos Verdes, but the local rides are pretty flat. I think that the main thing that should drive your decision on where to live is where you going to work. Commuting around here sucks so the closer you live to work, the more time that you have to ride.

its all good. finding a place to live here isn't the easiest thing in the world, especially for a newbie.

Nowadays homes in el barrio pretty much start at a half mil...

One other thing about Burbank, there is a Metrolink station there that might ease transportation issues.

There are no suburbs in LA metro.

Live near where you work.
A long commute in LA is hell on earth.
Rapid transit here is a joke so be ready to drive (or ride) wherever you need to go.

There's plenty of great riding all over the LA / Valley area.

Hey I think the trains are actually pleasant. Also the express buses are not half bad.
If you combine both with biking you can really get around surprisingly well...

But I agree the best situation is to live close to the job...

I'm working with my boss to keep my current job....so basically I'd be telecommuting full-time. No commute :). There's a bunch of people who already do it scattered over the U.S., so.....we'll see. If that doesn't work, I'm a server backup geek (EMC Networker) if anyone has any leads :).

I'll be in an apt. for quite awhile....and yes, I will be on some rides. I'm down to 135 pounds right now, but not on the bike :(. Soooo.....the hills will be calling my name.

I will also probably get a "commuter" type bike at some point just to ride around on.

+1 Burbank is actually becoming more trendy (slightly) and desirable to live. But I'm with whomever suggested that you live where you work (if you can swing it), as a long commute will make you miserable.

George, I think what helps for me is my coworkers can't stand me. They encourage management that I should work from home.

if you want to be near the city but not in it, you could also consider coastal areas. The advantage there is being near the ocean for summer months and having the Santa Monica mountains for riding. The valley side (Burbank etc) gets exceptionally hot during the summer - a temperature difference of 30 degrees between the coast and inland isn't uncommon during the summer. THere's also an issue of air quality.

You mentioned you'd be renting. Malibu has some rentals that are around the same ballpark you'd find in other places in LA. On the other hand, if you want to be more around an urban experience, close to nightlife etc., and inland you should consider Los Feliz, Silverlake. Nearer the coast would be Santa Monica area.
