Classic & Vintage - 1960's(?) Legnano

Hi all,

I just won a "1960's" Legnano frame on ebay. I'm a little nervous about the purchase because of some of the seller feedback, but it was an impulse buy. I did one of my random searches for "ebay legnano" and the auction popped up with 2 minutes left. It took me a minute and a half to come up with the necessary excuses and apologies to my wife and the rest is history. Here is the link to the auction:

My questions for the group is A: Can anyone recognize the model from the pictures on the auction?
B: If and when the frame arrives, what components would have gone on this frame? Campy Gran Sport? I want to come as close as I can, although on my limited budget it will probably take about a year to put together.

If it is 1960s, it is very late 1960s, as suggested by decal in place of a headbadge, a decal in place of a painted downtube logo and the overall lack of chrome. The seat lug style in conjunction with the Campagnolo dropouts suggest a Gran Premio which was 2nd in the lineup.

The brakes were undoubtedly Universal 61 center-pull per the brazed on boss on the back of the seat lug, which mounts the cable hanger. Crankssets were typically steel cottered units. Depending of the actual year, derailleurs could be Campagnolo Gran Sport or Valentino. Hubs, stems and handlebars were typically Legnano branded.

I thought it looked more like 70's myself. I have never seen a Gran Premio without any chrome at all, but then again I have only seen the ones I could find on the net.

Yeah, I'd say 70s. If the front dropouts are Campagnolo its probably a Roma rather than a Premio. In that case, all Campagnolo, Universal brakes (I've seen the centerpull lug on bikes that came with sidepulls), 3ttt bar and stem.

I agree with T-mar's observations. I did a quick review of some other Legnano posts and your frame falls into that time slot. More detailed pictures would help a bit and I'm sure you'll post them when you receive the frame. Most definitely a Gran Premio model. I just purchased a 1966 Gran Premio. It has the older decal style and chrome head lugs. Pretty much all original except for derailleur upgrades to Nuovo Record. Anyway, you got a nice frame and it's coming from old Europe. Put Legnano into your favorite searches on ebay and you'll be notified whenever something Legnano goes up for auction. There's a Legnano Gran Premio on ebay now. Not totally complete but check it out.

If we assume that no one in command of his senses would fit a Valentino rear derailleur if it didn't come with it, the Legnano in the new auction is newer than 58.

My first idea is: relax and take a deep breath. There now - doesn't that feel better? My second idea is that the bike you linked to is later than claimed - at least if it is indeed "tutto originale" as described. The Valentino Extra derailleur I believe dates the bike to the late 60's (circa 1968) at the earliest. I would bet that eBay bike is from the late-60's early-70's and the seller just got it wrong - whether intentionally or unintentionally.

I agree with the others. The linked bicycle is not a 1958. It's curious how the pic of the seat cluster has been cropped just close enough to eliminate showing whether there is a boss for a center-pull cable hanger. Unfortunately the overall pic doesn't have the resolution to determine if it is there or not.

However, since it is like yours, it is a good example of how to build yours. Fortunately, it pretty much reflects what I said, earlier. The only notable discreapancy are the side pull brakes. I'd still go with the Universal 61 center-pull, on the basis of the boss on the back of your seat lug.
