Its frickin water! What did he drink $1 worth of water. If filling a couple water bottles is too much to ask then there really is a problem. Not to mention it was offered by the volunteers.
How much water would you buy to make sure you could supply an indefinite amout of riders that you didn't allocate for?

at what point does that stop though????? he was bonking hard and needed food? he was bonking and needed a ride? how is it fair to the others who DID pay???? i was there and no, id never not give someone water if they were hurting, but to go out and do the entire ride AND hit he CP's for stuff....uncool.

I would but twice as much as I thought we would need. Its not gonna go bad. You can always use it next event. You still seem to miss the point. To publicly call someone a thief to "accepting" water that was offered to him is very bad business. Perhaps being kind and supportive is better public relations.

Next up I'll be reading how I pillaged the village and ate all the babies...
I actually had more than enough food and gels even gave some to the other riders who were hurting. If one is saying that riding bandit is bad and by accepting offers of water I went over the line (wait someone has already said that), well that is what that is.
Let's just go easy on the hypotheticals please as this will just get uglier.
How about just talking about the positive experiences of the ride?

Well I have had this happen to me once. I was out on a ride, didnt know there was a century going on, and it got much hotter then forcasted. The rest stop folks invited us into their area. We told them we were not part of their ride, they insisted it was no problem. I was not bonking, and could have made it to the store, but they insisted. So we had some fruit, a muffin, they refilled our bottles with water and heed, and we moved on. Ive run into these folks several more times since then. Great organization, and someday I hope to have time to ride with them.

I guess it's a matter of the scope of the ride. In principle, pirating supplies from any ride is wrong, but a ride with the budget of the MS150, for instance, would probably have a bit more overhead for spare bottles of water or food than a much smaller budgeted ride, especially in the event of unforseen heat or some other circumstance.
And just for the record, I'm talking about pirates and rides in general, not this particular ride, or this particular case.
I don't know who issued the event permit but down here we base some of the fees on participant numbers. If you have considerably more than your application claimed, you might be invoiced.
If we get complaints for behavior such as running traffic lights, we'll require that the organizers take measures to stop it. If that doesn't work or it was widespread, we won't issue a permit for future events.
I work with a lot of events. I like the ones that are highly organized.

I also got to Deer Creek when they were almost out of water. I think they had 1 last container and I was lucky enough to get the last of the water. I would have been in big trouble going up Decker if I had not re-filled.
I don't understand how you could have been in "Big trouble", Neptunes Net (http://www.neptunesnet.com/)was like a mile from there with bathrooms and water and food and bikers and biker chicks. If I had been working at that check point and ran out of water I'd just tell people sorry were out but good news, Neptues Net is a mile down the road:)

I'm just guessing but I think that the larger problem could have been posting here about it. Even if you're a nice person, didn't use much, and didn't mean any insult, posting about it where the ride organizers post is really putting it in their face, right in public. Very few people are saintly enough to let that slide.
OTOH, I think it was an unintentional slight on mr lopez's part and he's been totally upstanding in admitting he made an error in judgement. A lesser man would have whined about it. I'd hope that PU would acknowledge that and quietly let him know that he's welcome to sign up for their events in 2009. Or something like that.

I cant believe you drove all the way down there when you could have done our route from a few weeks ago, added in Jamison and had a nice ride in the shade.:p Man it was nice here this past weekend. Maybe I will see you at Wente. I wasnt gonna do the RR, but now I have the day free. Is there much climbing?

Ok, I have to comment on these issues as I have at least ridden a few of PU's rides unlike some of the other posters. Let me start off with the fact that I did not ride the MC this time, so I will not even address the water issue.
I will however, comment on how so many people complained about things that did not personally happen to them. My point is, if someone (will not mention his name because he wants it that way) has no further issue with PU and is fine with the situation then why is everyone else crying like a bunch of sissies!
Next issue: I have NEVER heard or seen Deb being rude or otherwise treating anyone poorly or unfairly. I have only had good experiences with PU and will continue to support them.
Next: The rules are posted and if you choose to not follow them then there are penalties to be paid. It is so simple. I can not believe the number of people that will look for any excuse to cover there failures or poor judgment.
I am quite sure that Deb is going to make any changes that she can to insure that the next years MC will improve and continue to be one of the most challenging and epic events in Southern California.
Caligurl reported no issues with PU or the running of the ride this year. She did, like so many others, voice the heat as an issue.
My final opinion...Like it or not... Just ride and forget the small s***!

As mentioned above every ride organizer has their rules. When you sign-up you're expected to follow the rules and the laws that govern the operation of bikes in the State of California. If you don't like the rules of the organizer don't sign-up, simple concept. In doing the Hemet Double I saw many cyclist that ran stop signs causing cars to slam on there brakes to keep from hitting them.

I've been reading all of the posts about the trials and tribulations on this year's MC, and I'm saddened to hear that some people had less than a spectacular experience. As for myself, I had an absolute blast on this epic ride! (I just HAD to change the subject back to something more positive.)
I agree with everyone that this was one tough ride. The heat, the climbs, the sketchy descents, etc. all played a part, but man - what a beautiful day in those Santa Monica hills! I have to admit I was soooo nervous Friday night and Saturday morning that I could hardly contain myself. I had never ridden a course before where I had to make it to checkpoints by certain times. I didn't know how I would perform, but I hoped my training would pay off. As it turned out I did pretty well. My ride time was 8:17, but my official course time was 9:35. I took some extra time at a few rest stops to make sure I wasn't overheating or getting dehydrated, but still a good time overall. Besides, I couldn't pass up the Diet Pepsi calling my name . . .
It was great to see a few familiar BF faces along the way, although I was terrible at remembering names. Sorry! Joy - thanks for the words of encouragement and I hope to catch you on one of the next rides. WhiteCarbonDude - you rocked up Decker! Whoever that guy was who rode up Decker with a flat tire - you were either crazy or superhuman! My gawd! And Cyn - you definitely had an angel watching out for you when you took a spill. Heal fast and get back on that machine!
Hope to see some of you at Breathless Agony!

Wow! Same for me!? I've NEVER cramped on my inner thigh. My calve, hammy, quad, hell even my arms, but never my inner thigh. In fact I'm still feeling some residual pain in my left thigh 4 days later.
I wonder if it was the nature of the climbs? Decker was a beyatch!

Strange I've talked to 4 friends now that had inner thigh cramps on Saturday and we never get them there. I think it was the heat.

Make that 5! I had cramps into the inner thigh near the knee as well. Not the quads, but the muscle below/behind them. One would go, then the other.
I'm sure it was so much time in the seated climbing position. Plus, somehow my saddle had slippped back onto the seatpost, putting me much further back than I usually am. I just thought it was me!

Me 6. Didn't actually get the cramps but was close many times in the spots you describe. I think that area is called abductor longus (inner thighs). At gyms they have machines that work that area, I've used them before years ago.

Turns out it's "adductor longus", but you may be on to something. Or perhpas the "sartorius" muscle?

oh yea, thanks, Adductor it is. The sartorius looks a little high but I see it does extend all the way down and to the side. On link you provided, it looks like adductor magnus is close to the exact cramp location. Could be all those little guys I guess.

I too have had the same "grabs you like a tight fist" cramp on the inner thigh. It has happened to me in the past on hot rides, twice on the DR coming out of Hermit's Valley, and once on Hearbreak, climbing up Heartbreak ridge.
But it didn't happen to me on this years MC. I changed my strategy a little, I have started to use the powdered form of Hammer's endurolytes and added it to my sports drink mix. I made sure that I consumed one bottle of sports drink between each water stop/cp on the course. In addition I pre-loaded with Hammer's Liquid Endurance, which is a glycerol based product. Glycerol is suppose to help the muscles retain more water, and make the body more resistant to the heat.
I bought both in the past after the previous cramping problems but never used them, recently I ran out of endurolyte capsules and remembered I had the powder, so I started using it with my sports drink mix. Now I don't have to remember to take the capsules, since it is now in my drink mix. Then after seeing how hot it was going to be last weekend, I read the instructions on the Liquid Endurance and tried that. Heat & climbing rides have never agreed with me, but after using these two products in combination, I am now a believer.
This ride this year was difficult as always, but the heat just made it all the more difficult. I feel if I hadn't had followed the above protocol, I would not have had the quality of ride that I did. I really felt sorry for the way I saw so many suffering because I have been there before.

Interesting. I used Endurolytes, Perpetuem, and Heed together at the MC and I even grabbed a few extra capsules from someone who offered, and still cramped in a way I never had before. I haven't tried Liquid Endurance but will look into that. Thanks for the tip.
BTW going on day 5 and the inside of my left thigh (the longus) is still hurting. It's taking the longus time to heal. OK, that was bad. :D

With all the bad jokes, I'm wondering if this was the Mulhahalland Chahallenge.
I didn't do the MC, but as far as cramps this year i haven't had any. Ususally by now I've have something cramp either while riding or just after. The only thing I've changed this year is I'm adding EleteWater, http://www.eletewater.com/, to my bottles. One thing that helped last year that I still doing is I use the adductor machine at the gym.
When did you all start to cramp up? Mine kicked in late, about mile 95 or so, after coming down Piuma and heading back to Agoura. Makes me think it's truly related to dehydration and/or electrolyte issues...

Stunt. I was hurtin' bad even though that climb is only tough at the top. Agree it was purely a dehydration issue.

You should send this testimonial to Hammer. :)
I had serious cramps last year at the bottom of Decker. I had to get off the bke and try to stretch for 10-20 minutes. When I started training for this ride a few months ago, I still had cramping issues so I started drinking Accelerade, Sustained Energy and taking Endurolyte capsules. That seemed to cure it.
This year I had no cramps. I drank 2 bottles of water and had 4 Enduralytes and 4 ibprofen at each rest stop then drank 2 bottles between stop.

The only thing about the Hammer sustained energy drink is the dubious claim about being "unflavored." If it's unflavored, then so is wallpaper paste.
That said, I was able to get down several bottles, which probably helped me not to cramp.
One of the people at a rest stop told me it would taste better if I poured some gel into it. It didn't seem like a good time to experiment.
