Well, on the suggestion of some friends, I tried my first 'cross race yesterday. Eugene, OR if anyone else on this forum was there. Got my but thoroughly whipped, but still enjoyed it, should have started earlier in the season.

Any training tips to avoid embarrassing myself next year?

Do as many crits as you can in the spring and summer. Also, get your body as light as possible without looking like a twig.

Meh. It's 'cross. Drink beer, eat too much, race. Repeat until March.

Well, this got me quite the mixed bag of advice :^).
Blaming teh quipment works for now, I'm riding a old mtn bike for 'cross currently.
Ride lots is in the plan, in fact pretty much was the extent of the plan to date.
Ride crits. Hmmm.... I can do that, then go back to the first tip (blame equipment). Loosing some weight would not hurt.
Drink beer, eat too much, race- The most appealing advice, but since I don't care for last place, maybe not the ideal plan.

Thanks for the "help", next season will be better!

Well, I've been following it diligently and have not yet ended up in last place. Reconsider? :)

Just do it! Even if your DFL you'll still have fun. :)

See, you already learned the most important thing. You found out just how bad racing hurts. You already know the only way to inoculate yourself against the pain is to train that hard. Build a decent endurance base and do intervals, short and long. I like pyramid intervals (google 'em) and I like adding a run to the front of each one. It hurts pretty bad.

There are training tips all over teh interwebs, figure out what you need and have fun with it.
