I gather that you have already experienced this joy this winter? We have had snow, but it melted off before I could get out there and have fun. Usually in January the snow sticks long enough to crunch.

Wondering what the score was on studded tires? I don't have a set and I see no one around here on them. Still, with all the ice on the streets this Winter, can they be more dangerous than walking? (I have been doing quite a bit of walking lately and have had to resort to inserting small wood screws in the soles of my boots... it is hell out there!)

Just be thankful that you don't drive! :eek:
Studded tires are excellent. You can ride on sheer ice with them. I fall down once in a great while, but not nearly as often as I do when walking on ice. You can put screws in your bike tires for homemade studs. See the Winter biking subforum for directions and reviews.

Love winter weather! Last winter I didn't ride at all, but this winter I've made it a point to have something urgent to do far away every time it snowed or sleeted.
The other night, I was riding home at 2AM in sleet, and the only other vehicles out were the snow-plows. They were a little surprised to see me enjoying 4 lanes to myself. I was warm and toasty in my layers, despite the frozen beard. And the best part is, my bike gets to feel badass, because it's been waiting a loooong time for this. You see, when people ask me how I can ride in the given conditions, I just tell them it's all about the bike, and point this out:

Winter hasn't even come close to starting yet here. It is very strange but it has been cool to warm almost all the time since fall (except for a few days). The higher elevations here have seen their share of ice, though.

I think most of the country has gotten their winter by now. We got 8 inches on Sunday. I have to admit, I was a little freaked out about the ride to work on Monday, but all went well. The cars weren't iving me much room on the streets that were narrowed by the snow, however.
Even before the snow, I already rode just a little on a frozen lake near my house. I don't trust the ice this early in the winter, even though it seems real solid. I mostly stayed in the shallow areas....just in case.

Winter here too...it got down to 28 degrees in Charleston, SC last night:D supposed to hit the low 60's tomorrow:rolleyes:;)

theres definitely a foot of frozen snow on the ground right now, and lots of black ice. i'm getting by with my 25c road tires, all about the finesse, though it's annoying since the snow isn't plowed to the edge of the road in a lot of places with narrow streets to begin with, and then people parking on the street where they normally cuts into the road a lot too. it's frozen over pretty fast. a lot of the sidewalks are messed up, it's annoying when people don't shovel/de-ice their sidewalks and i have to walk in the road.
