Hello,

I am a physician and part time professor at a local college. We have recently received funds to set up a human performance lab at the college. I am responsible for purchasing of the equipment in the lab, and was wondering what would be the best stationary bike for VO2 testing? We are not specifically training cyclists, but mostly students and local athetes. Thanks for any suggestions.

You would want an Ergometer to accurately measure workloads.

Something like one of these:

They are not cheap, but IMO are a requirement for lab quality measurements.

Wouldn't a literature search reveal what is used most in studies most closely related to your area of research. As I recall, a Monarch ergometer is frequently used.
