What are things in the past that were immensely popular that you just didn't get?
Movies? songs? Singers? TV shows? Toys? whatever.....what are some things that were just immensely popular that you just didn't understand why.
A few for me:
Troll Dolls (forgive me A. Troll)
Martin Lawrence movies
Adam Sandler movies
Wil Ferrel movies
Michael Jackson (back in the day)
Van Halen
How about you?
Pet Rocks
Chia Pets
Rubiks Cube
Cabbage Patch Kids
Ginsu Knives
POGS
Boy George
Klik Klaks
Oh God.....the list is endless..........................
Srar Trek
Okay KT! What about Srar Trek?;)

I was more worried about your choice of Boy George. I happen to like him. :)
Anything is viable....its someone else's opinion.
Personally, I liked Start Trek:TNG, but every other one "lost my interest".

Funny story. I was so out of touch with "pop music" by the time that came out....I was on a date with a girl at a baseball game (farm team). They played that and EVERYBODY in the stadium knew the song and dance and got up to do the dance. I was the only one who had never heard the song and had no idea there was a dance to go to it. I think I was pretty proud of myself at that moment (especially after watching them do the dance).

I didn't say it had to be past....present popular things are valid.

Not so funny story ... my wife was teaching ballroom dance at the time this came out. Of course evvvveryone wanted to learn the Macarana ... and of course I had to help out my wife by demonstrating the dance with her to new students .... over and over and over again .... [shudders]
The Electric Glide and every other dance where all the women dance and all the guys just sit and watch them!

Well, some of the hairstyles - like mohawk, etc. Never did get it. The other thing I still don't understand is hairstyles for men that require work. I comb my hair once a day - after that, it is on its own.
Situation comedy lives me cold. I don't like seeing people made fun of and I really don't get the humor at someone else's expense. After all, if it is done to you, it normally is no longer funny.
I'm growing one now as I type this!
Those Tamaguchi things where you had to feed them or they'd die.
Power Rangers
Pocomon
Soap Operas
Geez I remember mullets! They went away?
Most youth/teenage fashion I don't get. Even when I was of the proper age for such things, it seemed really stupid to me.
For example, the style right now seems to be not only oversized, sagging pants, but massive, skirt-length t-shirts on top of that. It looks like these guys are either trying out for the part of Alvin, Simon, or Theodore, or they're dressing up like small children wearing their father's clothes.
Oh, and when did sunglasses go from stylish and functional to being an arms-race of ugliness? Good god, people.
Now get off my lawn.
Oh, and that 80's style for women with the long sweater and tights. It didn't look good then it doesn't look good now.

Muffin top look
Goth
Rap
Pop music (oxymoron)

Burn the Bra era, some women/men should never go there. (shudder)
And by the way, I like mullets. :)

I didn't hate Seinfeld....I just didn't get the it's the BEST COMEDY IN HISTORY mentality that seemed to be (and still is to a degree) going around.
In that same vein, I'll add Friends to the list.

no better or worse than the silly short sweaters and jackets they are wearing today.

You obviously didn't see the classics (Poppy making pizza with the "special" ingredient, Deloris, George pushing the kids out of the way in an almost fire emergency). I could go on and on. As you can tell I'm in the "best comedy TV show every" camp. I love subtle & sarcastic humor ... they were the masters.

Um...yeah, nearly all those sound familiar. I'm sure I've seen them all. I'm not saying I didn't find it funny.....but I just don't think it was thaaaaaaaaaaaat great. It's a funny show, but wouldn't make my top 5......maybe not even my top 10.

I don't get just about anything the human herd animal does. Top of my list have to be tattoos and piercings. Tattoos are really funny, individually different while still firmly stating your one of the follower sheep. Welcome to the pack.

KT has officially joined the cranky old man club I think. Anyway, here's my cranky old man list:
hip hop
drum'n'bass
bo'selecta
the office
rim brakes on bicycles
track ends on bicycles
bike lanes
se7en the movie
usual suspects the movie
stanley kubrick movies
sagging your pants
"artists" that can't even draw (this excludes artists like picasso who could draw brilliantly but chose not too most of the time)
200mph supercars in 10mph london traffic
star trek and it's many, many clones
why no-one else laughs all the way through mad max 1
the whole "emo" thing

We pretty much need clothes to survive in most climates. However we don't have to be a slave to fashion trends.
Michael Jackson (back in the day)
i mean, i can understand not getting why people like him now, but back in the day (assuming you mean the Thriller/Bad era) he was freaking amazing. Dangerous and later? meh.

i'm with you, man. i love the movie, and stuff like this still makes me howl:
"She sips nitro... with Phase 4 heads! 600 horsepower through the wheels! She's meanness set to music and the ***** is born to run!"
things i don't get, though?
"reality" TV
Oprah Winfrey

Woohoo! I thought I was alone on that one. The cut to scenes of Mel Gibson's wild eyed close ups took some beating.
I forgot about "reality shows" as I never watch any but it should be number one on my list....by a mile.
edit: big brother, survivor, I'm a celebrity, etc., I mean.
Things like mythbusters, kitchen nightmares, antiques roadshow, and so on are good for when you just need to disengage your brain and relax.

was it that a bunch of dudes, cross dressing, can be cool? I liked the music at that time but I never understood the wardrobe.
I don't understand why some gay men have lisps and others don't.
Why do paint colors need exotic names?

I finally know exactly how my mother felt about Rap music every time I hear some idiot kid playing "Death Metal." I would rather my child be a vandal or junkie than listen to something that overtly heinous.

I'll add....
Nascar (loud cars going in circle? wheeee!?!?!?)
Harley Davidson motorcycles (or other obnoxiously loud bikes that break down a lot)
Steel guitars (twang, ugh)
Debbie Gibson (or modern day equivalents B Spears & C Aguilera)
Back Street Boys
Menudo
Tretorns (though I find I like them now oddly enough)
I'll come up w/ more soon.

Sorry....it was too damn pop and girly for me. I was about 14 or 15 when Thriller came out and even then it wasn't the kind of stuff that was popular in the circles I was running in. It was just a little too feminine for me....I was more into metal in those days. But yeah.....good point that the ones that still love him are even weirder.
+1000 on reality TV (and Oprah too).
I'll third reality TV! Huh?
