My son and I just bought two Fenix flashlights for the Holidays. :)
He bought the P1 http://www.j2ledflashlight.com/images/fenix-p1-ce-black-1.jpg
which he already is calling the "pocket rocket". ;)

And I bought the P3d http://www.fenixtactical.com/images/fenix-p3d-q5-001.jpg

which puts out 215 lumens in turbo mode! :D

I've been doing some evening commuting lately and I'm hoping the P3d strapped onto my helmet will give me a bit more light I so desperately need. I'm also considering upgrading to a DiNotte headlight and tail light. But that's another story. :p

What will you use for batteries?

We went to DealExtreme.com and bought a recharger and about 8 different rechargeable batteries and thought we'd do some of our own testing and figure out which batteries will last the longest and give us the longest run times. :)

Out of curiosity, why did you go for a light with CR123 batteries instead of one that takes AA?

Many of the rcr123's are a tough fit for the p3d.. I found that the aw rcr123's that the fenix store sells have the best fit.. For me the battery station & ultrafire were just too tight a fit for the p3d..

i agree with socalrider....go with the awcr123's...i've tried the ultrafires and others from dx and none of them fit. (good thing they fit in some of my other flashlights)

Well that's NOT good news  I would really prefer it if the flashlight worked with batteries that it was designed to accept. I'll give it a try and if it won't fit I'll unhappily return it. But I'm going to remain optimistic. I really like the lumen output of the P3d. Besides the T1, the new P3d had the highest lumen output in it's price range. :)

I have the P3D and while lite output and quality are awesome, runtime on Turbo has not been as good as advertised.

They claim 1.8hrs, . My commute is 25 minutes each way. I can not quite get 3 trips out of it, maybe 70 minutes....

these are on the aw rcr123 batts direct from Fenix & their charger. I've gone through maybe 5-6 battery cycles so maybe the capacity will go up, but so far I'm like "where's the runtime?"

we'll see how it goes. if the runtime does not go up I may be forced to sell these & buy something else :(. Oh well, could be worse... :)

Now wouldn't that be annoying to receive my flashlight but not have any batteries to operate it with?!!
And I won't even address the possibility that when the batteries arrive they won't fit into the flashlight!

dx does in fact take a long time...and to return something ummm yeah....takes just as long.

Granted most manufacturers give ideal ratings...the ratings are based on primaries...not rechargeables. Rechargeables have a shorter run time then primaries.

like said above.. the time ratings are for primaries.. I found the estimated times to be pretty accurate.. The best source for true times can be found at the links below..

best bet for long run time is to run them at "high" instead of turbo...yeah you give up a bit of brightness. but at least you'll have light! Another option is to just carry extra rechargeable batteries.
