Classic & Vintage - Schwinn mirada?

Does anyone know where I can get more info on the Schwinn Mirada? I saw a pic of the bike that looks like mine and it's supposed to be an 1987 model. I'd like to swap out some parts but don't know the specs. Mainly just refreshing the bike a bit, like handle bars, seat etc... etc... I've seen some good deals on pricepoint but i'm not sure what size handle bars and stuff. Any info and help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone!

There's an '85 model on Tom Findley's Schwinn Catalogs website. The Mirada page is in the '85 Schwinn ATB catalog HERE (http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1980_1990/1985_atb07.html), and the specs are HERE (http://www.trfindley.com/flschwinn_1980_1990/1985_atb09.html).

It's probably safe to assume the '87 Mirada would be in the '87 Schwinn ATB catalog, but Tom doesn't have the '87 on his site.

If you're replacing the tires, be sure to check the size carefully. I've seen a couple mid-80s Miradas with 650B rims. At least I think it was the Mirada.

My old Mirada had 26 inch wheels. The frames are tanks...If the drops are horizontal I'd convert it to a 3 speed hub for cruiser action. You really can't climb worth a damn on the frames even with a triple. The stock cranksets were very cheap. I think these frames are the ideal candidate for single speed/rack grocery getter bikes. Any MTB quill stem will work from e-bay. They have the kalloy ones for about 20$ price including shipping. Get some goofy mustache bars and make a sweet single speed....

IMO gears don't make the bike move worth a damn. The frames are just tanks. If you insist on keeping it geared look at the cheapy Bulletproof cranks for 40$ they will give you a big gear and nice granny unit.

That looks to be it in the 87 catalog. It's the mens version in the upper hand corner. Are the specs on the bike the same as the 85? Also sorefeet, where would I be able to get these bulletproof cranks that your talking about? I'm thinking about keeping it geared and would just like to upgrade the saddle, handle bars, pedals and a few other minors including the cranks. Thank you everyone for chimming in. i'm assuming that the handle bar size on this bike is the standard size correct?

How can you tell if it's a 650B? Schwinn marked everything 26"

It may be stamped "650B" on the rim or if the tire says 584, that's what you've got.

Sorry about resurectin such an old post. I was offered one recently. A search brought up this. So, the rest is history. I've got to believe 650B tires are easier to find now than 2 years ago.

AFAIK, Schwinn reintroduced the 650B (same size as the S-4) on the Frontier in 1992 as a way to get around the 30% tarrif on MTB's from China. Needless to say, the lower tarrif on their cheap mountain bikes didn't save the company.
