Join us for the second annual BURRITO CENTURY. Sunday December 16, 2007.
Meet at Irvine Amtrak Station, 15215 Barranca Parkway, Irvine, CA 92618 at 6:30am. We roll at 7:00am sharp. Our destination is the San Diego Amtrak Station, 1050 Kettner Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92101. Approximately 102 miles.
This is a social, no drop ride. Undoubtedly, slower and faster groups will form. The key principle is looking out for your fellow BF riders.
Be sure to bring a valid picture ID. You absolutely need this for riding through Camp Pendelton.
This is an unsupported ride. Bring everything you need. Don't forget money for the train ride back. See Amtrak web page (www.amtrak.com) for fare information.
Check this thread for updates (route slip, rest stop locations, etc.) as Sunday approaches.
Rest/regroup stop #1. 7-11 Store, 1118 S. El Camino Real, San Clemente 92672. It's at the corner of El Camino Real and Avenida Pico. It may be slightly off course, as the course takes us through the San Clemente train station lot. But the 7-11 is pretty obvious, and you should have no trouble seeing it. It's about 34 miles into the route. For those of you that did the BF ride to Solana Beach this summer, it's the same 7-11 we stopped at.
Lunch Stop: Lunch will be in the area immediately surrounding the Solana Beach Amtrak Station. The address is 105 North Cedros Avenue, Solana Beach, CA 92075. It's quite visible from PCH, to your left (that is, the non-beach side of PCH) once you've ridden south on PCH for a while. There are many food options there. Burritos aren't mandatory. NOTE: This is about 75 miles into the ride. Be prepared -- you may want to eat something medium-substantial at the 2nd rest/regroup stop (and/or something between that stop and lunch).
Rest/regroup stop #3: La Jolla Village Square, at the corner of Villa La Jolla and Nobel Drive. Lots of options there.
POST-RIDE DINNER/DRINKS: El Cholo Restaurant, 5465 Alton Parkway, Irvine, CA 92604. Join us for some Mexican food, or just a drink. All are welcome (including non-riders).

So...I'm seriously considering a "Chips & Salsa" route.
Most of you know that the phrase, "We roll at 7:00am sharp." means "cjbruin is out" so here's an alternative.
Amtrak from Irvine Train Station to Oceanside or Solana Beach (yes, ride the train)
Ride to San Diego (lunch in Solana Beach with the Burrito group)
Oceanside option ~40 mi
Solana Beach option ~25 mi
Any other slackers out there want to join me? I may even be able to get Rose to tag along if we do the shorter option.

12-11-07, 11:27 AM
nah i don't plan on going too fast, since it's gonna be a long day and we'll have an earlier start time them the main group. You want to hop in the pace line with us? PM Frank for his addy. Plan is to roll at first light, so about 6:30 BURRRR. I should get to his place about 6 or so. Pending on legs, I'm going to ride with the group to either Solona Beach Train Station or go all the way to SD and take the train back to Oside.

Anyone interested can meet at my house a little before 6 or at the Oceanside Transit Station (195 South Tremont, Oceanside, CA 92054) a little after 6. The transit station is better for anyone returning from SD. There is plenty of free parking, restrooms and you will not have to ride back to my house after dark. If you decide to park in the parking structure there, and you use a roof rack, take the bike off first.
Matt, sorry for derailing your thread.

Originally (last year), we had lunch at a Mexican place in Leucadia.
As was noted last year, burritos aren't mandatory (some people prefer not to eat something like that during a long ride, so last year we selected a lunch spot with many options). The name of the ride was mainly meant to pay homage to what is probably the world's most perfect food.

OK...the "Chips & Salsa" route is more or less official.
Rose and I are going to catch the train from Irvine to Oceanside and try to get the timing right so we can hook up with the group for lunch in Solana Beach. We'll ride to San Diego from there and catch the train back to Irvine. I think the total mileage will be just over 40.
Anyone looking for a shorter ride is welcome to join.

Sounds good. BUT....(hope this doesn't mess things up).
Last year the lunch was later in the ride than many people (myself included) expected. This was due, in part, to the mileage on the route slip being a bit off.
Options:
1. We still shoot for lunch in Solana Beach, knowing that it's about 75 miles into the ride. If people know this, they can be prepared by eating more along the way.
2. Eat lunch earlier in the ride (say, in Oceanside).
Any thoughts? My inclination is option #1, but I'm flexible.

I think so. In a minivan we should be able to fit in 4 bikes with front wheels removed in the back and still have 4 seats.

Good deal. I'll add you to the list.
Not sure what train we'll make. Looks like there's one at 3:00, 4:00, and 5:20pm. Would be nice to make one on the early side, since there is a Chargers home game (lots of football fans will board at the Old Town station, one station north of the San Diego (downtown) station where we're boarding).
The good news is if we have 10 or more riders (or something like that) we can get a group fare -- saving each person a couple bucks.

NFL.com says the game starts at 2:15PM... that means that we should be in the clear for the train ride if we get on at the 3 or 4PM options... the 5:20 option means that we will have tons of fans boarding at the next station...
We will want to ask about having the bikes put into the cargo car instead of leaving them in the normal spots...

12-14-07, 04:42 PM
Good idea.
Last time the game didn't create huge problems. Hopefully we can make it by 4pm.

So where is the route slip?
mateo44
12-15-07, 08:56 AM
Route slip added to OP. Note that it's dated 2006. I'm too lazy to change the date.
Also, note one tricky turn that flummoxed us a bit last year. It's the right turn onto bike path at mile 94.5. It's easy to miss that quick right turn onto the bike path.
Finally, a word of caution regarding the mileage. The overall ride mileage is correct, but there are legs that are a bit off. The thing is the distance to the lunch stop is underestimated -- it's really around mile 78.
