Foo - Should i light a fire?

This isn't the best pic and I don't have a 3D camera, but suffice it to say that the tree branch above the chimney is touching the chimney cap. I'm not crawling up there to address the issue since everything is covered in ice and the limb is probably ready to drop anyway.

But if the power goes out, i need a fire. Should i light it?

Doubt the heat that would escape out of there would do much if it got cold enough to need the fire.

Heat might melt some of the ice on that limb and keep it from falling. I say go for it.

Go for it Portis. As the fire heats up and the exhaust warms the ice will melt which will lighten the branch and the branch will lift. You will actually be helping the tree. Do it.

I was thinking the same thing. I can see no harm in lighting a fire, and it probably will help keep the branch from breaking.

I climbed up on the icy roof and did some trimming. Hell, i'm a winter cylclist nobody said i was smart. Now almost the entire neighborhood is out of power except for my house and a couple to the West. We are very lucky. I've called the neighbors and invited them to come over and stay.

I'm not the friendly type but I can't stand the thought of them not having power when the temps are heading to the teens.

yes, do the fire thing. Then please, when the ice is gone from the whole tree, have a tree service come and remove the whole truck that is leaning towards your roof. The next ice storm could bring the thing through your roof. And the other dead stuff from the rest of the tree please.
