I second johnprolly's nomination of saving your money.

You already have a conversion, so you have time to wait to find a bike you like.

And yes, I put the wrong tense of a word. I believe it was pointed out previously.

Personally, I would just wait for the next batch of Kilos. Probably another shipment on its way already.

Save up your money and get something better than a Mark V even, if you can.

I have a Kilo and already have plans on moving up to an IRO or Bare Knuckle. Stick to your conversion until you have enough cash for something way more better. and kilo sizes suck 53-57 jump is not cool at all.

ssspenser
12-11-07, 04:53 PM
so everybody here agrees the mark v's are worth the extra 200 in comparison to the kilos?

and thank you all for the advice

Go with the Bareknuckle. An IRO frame is barely an upgrade from a Kilo TT frame.

Agreed. A bareknuckle is a solid mid-end steel frameset. Keep in mind you're going to be adding you own components, but if you started with the kilo you'd probably be upgrading a lot of stuff anyhow.

oh, an OP, just rock the conversion and save a little extra or shop around for a bargain, you'll find something you'll like better than an off the peg bike with a little patience.

Does everyone like the Barenuckle? I want a light but heavyduty bike next. Maybe a bareknuckle is it for me, too.

peabodypride
12-11-07, 06:08 PM
It seems the BareKnuckle is the best steel frameset you can get in the $400-$600 range without ebay or finding a special deal/NOS/etc. I say go for it. TheBikeBiz will have white ones soon too.

I don't really see any reason why the Bareknuckle is better than an IRO or other comparable frameset. I like the Bareknuckle, but I think most riders would be equally well suited with something less expensive.

If the OP can wait, and he already has all his components (which it sounds like he does, if he's riding a conversion), then the Kilo TT framesets are going to be available stand-alone in February for $175 shipped. That's a better deal than any IRO.

trying to determine why dudes are hammering the cheaper bikes.

Are you guys all pro racers doing fixie races or something or just being elitist?

For commuting or riding around town, I'm not seeing how a high zoot fixie is any better than a cheap one.

I, actually being an ex Cat 1, venture to say that on my Kilo that I built up for around $500 [w/ the aftermarket wheels and Keos] would give most a solid run for their money in terms of getting from point A to B in as little time as possible.

I have no problem with a Kilo TT. I just like high quality equipment because I like having high-quality things if I can afford them. Not saying any of the sub-400 bikes aren't high quality, but if you can afford the nicest stuff you can buy, why not? My new bike is going to be about $1700.. sure I could get around on a Kilo, but why not buy a bike that I choose the components on, with parts not [all] made in third-world countries? I guess my point is for day to day riding all off-the-peg fixies are great and reliable, but if you've got the cash, why not?

Again, not bashing the Kilo TT or third-world-made parts (although I realize even parts that claim to be made in Japan, America, or Italy have some ties), but if you can safely afford a Mercedes without going into financial trouble, why get a volvo?

You know, lots of Volvos cost as much or more than lots of Mercedes. Obviously Mercedes has the higher top end, but a better analogy would have been Honda or Toyota.

Anyway, I'm genuinely curious, where are you going to assemble a bike for $1700 with components not made in the third world?

I probably should redact that statement, since the whole time I was thinking more of cars than bikes. The only component probably not made 3rd world is the frame, but it's really an off-topic discussion about buying 3rd vs not. But it doesn't really matter!! :)

And you are right about volvo. Bad company to pick, haha.

Bone - I respect your answer. It is funny, you have to admit, that some guys neg cheap bikes - when the fact of the matter is #1 - it does not matter for what the bike will be used for and #2 the odds of the people saying that being 'fred-esque is high.

A lot of people do not realize that a lot of high end road bikes are made in SE Asia - like most of them - Giant, BMC, Specialized, Scott, some Colnago CF frames etc, etc, and a lot of 'high end' Italian bikes - the CF ones - are made in Taiwan or China.

Cinelli claims that all of their stuff is made right outside of Milan. And I did admit twice that I realize a lot of "high end" stuff is still made in SEA, and I clearly pointed out I am NOT negging the Kilo. I don't know if you were generalizing an overall sentiment of people's misconceptions about high-end or singling me out without saying it, but I'll assume the former.

Are they completely sold out, or just sold out of your size? The ebay listing is gone but the bd site says they still have 53s and 60s.

Geeze, does no one answer the question? I have the Messenger, like it a lot. Buddy got the TT, its a little better. If you are adding brakes and a freewheel the Messenger is a better deal. Otherwise wait.

It ain't rocket science. $1700 for a fixed gear? Hope you are using someone else's money.

The raison d' etre of the Mercier Kilo is you have a complete Track bike you can ride for $349.
Of course if you want to spend 40% more and have the moolah, you can buy an IRO, Steamroller, Pista.
