I've heard that these actually exist. Any brands that are preferred?

+1 on dickies plus scissors

because cut-offs are going to be in next summer

edit: if you're going to make shants out of dickies, make sure you have a third party tell you what looks good. I cut them way too low before and they look dumb, but worked great. Above-knee is cool though, as far as cut off shorts.

i got two pairs of casual cycling pants for good deals. portland cyclewear's pant, and swrve cotton dynamic knickers.

portland cyclewear is light, stretchy material, with a built-in light padded liner. think an odd cross between a bathing suit, and cycling underwear. not bad, but too bunchy. i cut out the padded liner and didn't look back. love the material - super comfortable in the warm weather. only problem is that i tore a hole in 'em on my tt cable guide. so off came the cable guide, and the pants have been waiting to be stitched together.

since then i've been wearing the swrve ones. really snug fitting. they're cotton, so they're definitely more casual and less cycling than the stretchy portland cyclewear ones. but i like the cut a lot and find them to be really comfortable on me. the arse zippers are a bit too big and they're just too snug for the rear pockets to be super useful, but that's just cause i've got a delightful arse. what can i say.

i like both of these pants a lot, but wouldn't have paid retail. i don't make a habit of paying that much for pants. or any clothing, really. but if that's what you're in to, then go ahead, and knock yourself out.

Random Jncos story..

I got set up for a blind date once. Was showed some very flattering pictures of the girl... I go to pick her up..

She is wearing Jncos.

She was 25.

Needless to say her personality was just as bad as her choice in pants.

no more ****ing parachute pants!

i got some wool knickers at the military surplus for 20 bucks. perfect winter shants. they come down just below the knee and have an elastic strap at the cuffs to get them nice and tight.

Portland Pants ($80 about) - Nice design a little to tight for my taste but theyre super nice and a good price. And yea the big tampon in them isnt all the comfy.

Chrome Pants ($145 about) - Real nice good for summer and winter. Summer becuase theyre light and loose. Winter because theyre water resistant.

Wool Surplus Knickers ($45) - Real nice. Thick for winter. They keep you warm and dry. Mmmm and theyre wool.

I check out all the pants and prices at "Veloce" in Portland. Dimitri (shop owner) probably doesnt have any more of the Wool Knickers, i got the second to last pair. I was back in Portland and visited his shop, i couldnt decide on the Chrome pants and the Wool knickers so Dimitri gave me them both for the price of the Chrome pants.

The story behind the Knickers is that they were surplus and a friend of his sent him a whole rack. But as nice rain pants go in rain season they were soon sold out.

And on a daily i wear Levi's Jeans. Nothing beats them

Summertime I prefer shorts. In the winter I have a set of wool dress pants I cut and stitched into shants that work great and cost me 5 dollars. Paying 100+ dollars for pants with the bottoms cut off seems silly to me

Slacks. Preferably polyester ones. They are thicker and warmer than cotton.
You can get em for $2 at the thrift store, and once summer comes just cut em off and now you have the best summer riding short.

What do you mean by messenger pants? Knickers or something cut specifically cyclist's guads?
A bike shop around here sells these http://www.swrvestore.com/servlet/Detail?no=56 I'm not too keen on spending so much for pants, but maybe it's worth it.

Thrift store slacks + straight edge + sharp utility knife. Done me well.

Also, Prana makes (or made?) some nice climbing knickers that work well for cycling. ~$50, IIRC.

I just roll up my pant legs. Then roll them down when I'm done/hanging out for a while. That way it doesn't look like I'm expecting a flood lol.

I just rock my cargo shorts year round. If it gets rediculusly cold i will throw some leggings on underneath.

I wear the swrve ones when I'm working. They're awesome, and if your company is at all uptight about presentability, they're long enough and black enough to look decently professional.

yea, seriously. What DO you (the OP) mean by messenger pants? Messenger as in real messengers? I've seen them with any cargo pants, some with legwarmers now that it's chillier.

or messenger as in the hipster form of all things bike specific, casual, and mostly overpriced? Not to say that they are not good, just saying that they're a little higher than the average person's budget. In which case, I guess you'ld mean Outlier (http://outlier.cc/) or Osloh (http://www.osloh.com)?

I am not a messenger. But I do ride +15mi a day and I wear the heavy duty chrome knickers in the winter (w/tights as needed).

Pricey... but so worth it if you ride in crappy weather (Chicago).

+1 on swrve. I have some knickers that are fleece lined that are uber comfy in the winter, but I got them cheap because the fabric faded when they made them. They still look nice, but I haven't decided if I'd have paid full price for them.
