Bicycle Mechanics - Help removing old Shimano freewheel

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
The freewheel is from the 70's and the LBS didn't have the right sized tool to remove it. I looked at the parktool website and they have a tool for removing 85 and newer freewheels. What about the older ones? can anyone point me in the right direction to get the tool or does anyone have any tricks to remove it? The reason I want the old one off is because I'm converting the bike to a single speed. Thanks in advance to any replies!

Bicycle Research (BR-CT4) still makes them and can be had at United Bicycle Supply. However, they only sell to dealers. Maybe you can get your LBS to order. Retail price should be $6. to $8. UBS also shows a Shimano tool (SH-TL-FW20). Same price range.
I don't know any other way to get it off except dismantling the body.
Thanks for the reply. I already solved the problem though. See: Sheldon Brown's "Removal by Destruction". Tomorrow I'll get a BMX freewheel and shorten the chain and I'll be done (except for painting)
Call other sources. I am sure they still make a tool. I cannot tell you the exact model without seeing what you have, but here we got a wall full of these older tools just in case.
