General Cycling Discussion - There's a bike in the kitchen (what am I gonna do?)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Altho' I have a garage, its a schlep to open it, (and anyway its full of motorcycles) so most nights my cycle ends up in the kitchen. Gets in the way and missus is not best pleased.
Anyone else share living space with their cycle?
If anyone actually sleeps with their cycle thats just strange. We don't want to know.

I actually have slept "with" my bike in the past. Just sleep though! It was on a tour a couple of years ago when I brought my bike inside the tent after it rained the whole of the first night. It became a bit of a habit after that!

I, too, store my bike in the kitchen as I do not have a garage. My other MTB stays outside. But, that's the bike I use for rainy days, so I figure leaving it outside is good training. That and the fact that my GF also moans and groans about the one bike that I bring inside, so I had best not push it.

I sleep with both my bikes :D I live in an apartment so they get to hang out in the bedroom... I've got no room for them anywhere else.
Something I've noticed is that most photos that people post of their cycles are indoors. Hmmmm....

I would never think of leaving my baby outside. She sleeps next to my favorite chair, in the living room.

Between the two of us, we've only got four bikes in the living room. I used to worry about what people (non-riders) would think when they saw them. Now I don't care. Love me, love my bikes.

I live in an old cottage without a garage, I was going to get a shed, but none of the insurance companies seem happy with sheds. At the moment my bike is tolerated in the dining room because it's colour goes with the decor, but I've been told this is temporary...
I'm hoping She'll soften when I get her a bike, althought where we'll keep that I don't know! I can just squeeze mine into the hall if I take the front wheel off...

I've since seen it. I had to go and get ready for work, so I missed it the first time. It might have been confusing because I never log out properly from home.

I just purchased a new trainer. It is advertised to be easily assembled. When it comes, my wife will have another adjustment to my sports gear. The den closet is full of cycling and scuba gear.
I figure the guest room will have my old road bike upright atop the trainer, which will be adjacent to my Total Gym. No room for guests for the winter. Have to just stay away. I figure the old roadie bike adds to the decor of the guest bedroom, since the walls display bike posters. Difficult to put the fourth bike in the garage, since the other three bikes are chained to the wall. Getting out the car door, escaping the garage access door requires you hopping over the bikes. Besides, putting the trainer in the garage would require a car be kept outside of the garage.

I keep the motorcycles in the house... one in the Kitchen, one in the hallway & one in the master bedroom

Wow! Talk about setting a great precedent for all us mere bicycle riders! :D

I keep my 'rain bike' in the garage where it can be stolen but I keep my more expensive bike in the house. As I only ride it in fair weather there is no problem with dirt and mud but now I just built a FS mountain bike so I will have to find a way to lock it in the garage or clean it before I bring it into the house ;) I cannot imagine leaving a bike outside all the time without a cover, even if it is a 'junker'. Of course in asking this question you realize you are dealing with the fringe element of bike owners here so this should not be construed as being 'normal' human behaviour. :D

I live with 5 bicycles in my kitchen. They are just fine. You have to think about what is really important (For instance I don't have a table in my flat but five bikes).

I guess I feel secure with my good bikes in the garage. I have cemented a u bolt in the floor and cable about all bikes and in turn spun through the u bolt. Probably more comfortable than in the den with my old bike on the trainer; because I have not a u bolt into the cement pad, under the house itself. I think the effect of a bike in the living room adds to the home decor, I call it modernism- art devo.

Oscar, you should have a special room especially for your bikes. Your bikes will be famous one day...
I don't have a garage, no spare room for storage, and the bedroom is already full, so my commuter bike and my road bike are parked in the living room.
When we have company the topic of cycling always comes up. Can't imagine why? :D
I did have the luxury of having my bikes in the garage, but the landlord has since got some more tenants to move in, so wants me to move the bikes into the garden shed....
That would be fine if it had a lock on the door....I think I'll have to have a word with him about this...
Cheers

Not to flaunt my status as a garage owner, but (well, ok I'm flaunting..) I did keep the bikes in the living room & basement until I purchased my house last year. Now I have a 30x30 foot insulated and finished garage to spend my winters in. Room enough for the car, the project car, and all of my bike crap (and then some).
The wife uses the attached 1 1/2 car garage, so this is my personal hideout in the winter.

First I'd go to a hardware store and buy a padlock or three. You mightn't win too many arguments with your landlord (I know).
Hi Chris,
Fair point, but be surprised to know that this landlord is quite reasonable...still, it might be a good idea to get a couple of padlocks and charge him with the bill ;)

My bike lives in my living room. In my flat on the third (fourth in US terms) floor. It gets cleaned in the kitchen. I sit next to it when I'm on the phone, and often start spinning the wheels during a conversation!
I have been told by both my mother and girlfriend that it doesn't look great there, but it actually makes me quite happy. :)

I guess I'm pretty fortunate, I've got a garage and a "game" room. The garage is home to the four mountain bikes, BMX bike, old Schwinn tandemn, various wheels, misc. parts, bike stand and tools. The game-room contains two road bikes, a Cycle-Ops fluid trainer(one bike usually mounted on the trainer) an old TV/VCR, some weights, a crusty old couch, a small refrigerator and an air-hockey table.
Did I mention my wife is a cyclist too and it was her idea for the gameroom. One of the road bikes is hers!

Well, I must say that my bikes are quite lucky. I still live w/ my parents (ugh), and commute to college, sometimes I even bike. There is a small, unused room in our basement, with an old computer in it.
The room was just wide enough to hang a couple bikes on the wall, so I bought some cheap hooks, and screwed them into the ceiling. It worked very well. My three bikes live there now, along with (get this... and no I'm not exaggerating) my Dad's 13, yes 13 bikes. It actually is very efficient, regarding the space issues.
So, if you have some room and can punch a hole or two in your ceiling, get some hooks (they have rubber skins over them) from your local hardware store, and your bike will be able to live inside, and not take up as much space.

When not being ridden, mine shares space with my wardrobe but it often comes out of the closet. (Geez! That just doesn't sound the way I meant it to...)
I share my living space with all but three of my bikes which are locked in the laundry room. I have three cdale frames on the wall as object du arte, an MTB in the bedroom, one in the closet with three wheelsets, the kitchen has three bikes in disrepair(I use one of the frames for truing wheels). In the living room with the frames on the walls are two frames behind the hide-a-bed, the roadie, and two fixed gears, and the Fuji roadie/single speed on the trainer. I think that is about all I have in a one bedroom apartment.

I have a moderate sized apartment with barely enough room for my wife and me, let alone my two bikes. Basically they are both always right out in plain sight in the living room. No rack, no stand. just leaning up against the wall or furniture.
It's getting so that they are becoming part of the family. Yesterday my wife referred to them as "the children." :)
