Foo - Have any Foosters read the Dark Tower series?

I'm halfway through the Gunslinger, and talk about a very interesting book so far! How are the other novels through this series?

The Gunslinger was boring as hell, especially for the first half. The rest of the books were much better I think.

I loved them - haven't read the last one yet though. Keep meaning to but I think they're great. I like a lot of his stuff...movies not so much but they're getting better. Would like to see Mist - the story was freaky if I remember correctly.

Yes, I've read the Gunslinger series, there are seven books if I remember correctly. Wizard & Glass was my least favorite, it felt a lot like plagiarism to me.

The ending was a complete surprise to me.

I'm re-reading Skeleton Crew just because I wanted to read The Mist again in preparation for seeing the movie. I hope it doesn't disappoint like so many do.

it helps that i first read it in high school, i'm sure. formative years, and all that.

but the later books just lost the poetic flavour of the first.

and i never made it past The Waste Lands, fwiw.

One of the greatest opening lines evar for a novel. Right up there with "Call me Ishmael" & "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times".

I've read them all and loved every page.

read every one of them. great series, one of my favorties.

the Deathland series by james axler is similar. i'm reading those now.

Have yet to take on The Dark Tower series, but if we're talking fantasy-ish stuff, I would throw in a recommendation for George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. I've been re-reading them and they are incredibly engaging and dense with details and foreshadowing. The warring and political maneuvering are second to none. Start with A Game of Thrones. Get to about page 95 and the hook is set.

Now if Martin could just get the fifth book done....

Ender's Game, Speaker For The Dead, Xenocide, Wyrms, Alvin Maker series - heck yeah.

the more recent Ender stuff, the Shadow series, Homecoming saga - no. in fact, please make it stop.

His Mormon 'history' stuff and Folk on the Fringe is great too.

I had read through book 4. I had a very limited edition hardcover book 3 (The Wastelands) and gave it away. I use to live in Bangor, ME and still have family there. They see Steven King everywhere and my intentions were to have him sign it on a visit to my relatives, but noooooooo. I had to be stupid and nice.

I read Ender's Game freshman year, and ended up buying the next 3 books in the series. Book 2 was odd, and I only read about a quarter way.
