I'm a commuter and I use a mountain bike. I don't mountain bike on the same bike I commute but my friend let me try out his mountain bike with disc brakes not too long ago and I loved how responsive they were. I like the stopping power and quickness of them. What are some advantages and disadvantages? How oftend do you have to adjust your brakes? What are some of the maintanence duties that need to be done if any and how often.

I looked but my questions are much more specific. Mainly I want to know how long the pads usually last and how often you have to change the hydraulic fluid.

Pad life is determined on how much you ride and in what conditions you ride (wet or dry). I ride in the dry, not too frequently and change my pads about every year. Hyrduallic fluid usually only needs changing every year or so, even then it may not need to be touched.

Also, in a bike forum, it's espeshally impotent to know how to spell 'break'.

don't be fooled by the hype. disc brakes aren't really worth it.

bb7s sucks

Not according to 95% of reviews you read on the Internet. Most would say they are the gold standard for mechanical discs. :p

pros: pretty strong when new

cons: you have to carry multiple bottles of DOT 3,4,5 brake fluid with you, mineral oil, brake lines, cutters, barbs/olives, etc to replace blown up lines in the field, double of everything in case both leak on the same outing, they squeak, constantly rub, pads are expensive, always need bleeding, spare pads in case they need to be replaced on trail, alcohol wipes so you can clean your rotors when you take a break

...should i keep going?

Wow. Sounds like your experience with hydraulic discs has been the sh!ts.

You clean your rotors on breaks? That's waaay to hardcore for my lazy ***.
I don't even like cleaning my Camelback resovoir and that can be an immediate health risk. Your (collective not singular) bladders are probably much more sanitary than mine, I've had beer in it a time or two. Not while riding...yet.

If a break goes out on me during a ride its no big deal I still have the other one. :-) Besides I won't be mountain biking with a hybrid bike anytime soon. I just want it for where I live it rains 24/7 here so my breaks are getting eaten up. The break pads are more expensive? The life of them also last a hell of a lot longer. I've had a worse expierence with v breaks than you have had with disc breaks. Now what is better or does it matter, cable disc breaks or hydrolic disc breaks? How much do they differ? Also what are some reputable brands on disc breaks, talk to me as if I'm slow because I like to get all the info I can get. :-)

that is kind of like asking which bike is better at walmart...they're all lower end. save yourself the headache and get some quality v-brakes...like Avid.

cable disc brakes, like the popular bb7, are wretched. the hydraulic would be the lesser of two evils

"You all know, I hope, that MX is being facetious?"

Thanks, Doug. Don't know MX's posting well enough yet to know better. I was thinking he was WAY over the top about a kit with hose and olives and DOT fluid and the alchohol wipes..............gotta stay silly if you wanna recognize silly.

And, MX- I'm keeping my eye (and I do mean my ONE eye) on you. :p

we should really sticky this topic... i drop in to this forum once a while and every time i see a brand new thread asking about pros and cons of disk brakes...
I dont think it's a hype... I REALLY REALLY absolutely love them. Power is consistent in any terrain and maintenance is low (at least thats for me).

Why I will only use disc brakes:
no rim wear so no rim replacement every 6 months
consistent braking no matter what the weather and roads/trails are like
masses of power and great modulation
simple to setup, adjust and use
no hassle changing/removing wheels
no rim contact so no worries with out of true wheels
no grabbing or pads wearing so fast you have to replace every 2-3 weeks (wet, gritted roads or muddy trails)
much easier than cantilevers to install, adjust and maintain

disc brakes only
