He does seem a little happy with them doesn't he?
After viewing the pics on that page I can at least say that I don't have to use my imagination at all to envision his setup.

Hey, go easy on Al. Good guy, freely gives advice on all things Fenix on BF. There are worse obsessions out there. For me, it's Dinottes...still in the closet though. :p

If you had been monitoring the forum the last few months you would have seen many insightful and helpful comments from him. He has been instrumental in helping a lot of us, including me, come up with an affordable and better solution for bicycle lighting using these new flashlights. We owe him a debt of thanks for all his time and patience. If I have not thanked you properly, "Thanks Al".
I have a Fenix helmet mounted L2D CE Q5 and my buddy purchased 2 and the mounts, one for the helmet and one for the bar. He is a long time rider and was anticipating paying $200 more than he paid for the Fenix flashlights and mounts to replace his old lights. He immediately ordered the Fenix flashlights after seeing my helmet mount in action. I would have 2 or 3 Fenix flashlights myself if I had not already purchased at Princeton Tec Switchback 3 on closeout at Colorado Cyclist for almost 50% off retail prior to learnig about the "Fenix solution".

Admit it, you read the whole website, didn't you? Al's website is what convinced me to buy a Fenix light, and I'm glad I did. It's much brighter than my old Cygolite set up and shaved at least a pound of weight off my bike.
well some people are just....
I say scrap all that crap and just go buy a niterider or 'good > 200 buck' bike specific light and have a better light, better mounting, better charging,....etc. for less money.
wowza! that is some website. Nice photography too. I think every picture on there is better than any picture I have taken in my life!
i like Fenix too...
good info on that site...no reason to bash.

That's a cool website!
I am not bashing the guy at all. The guy is cute.
Seriously though, Fenix is great to make people notice you but it can't compare to a real bicyle lighting system. I am getting 300l out of my NiteRider system right now and I would like to at least triple that amount of light.

Rather like how we can't compare you to a helpful member of Bike Forums.....
Ha, that guy is cool. He posts here and CPF, and actually contributes a lot.
I agree though that more effective lighting systems can be made DIY for that price.

You got sold at some point...
Two of those lights work...great lights...
Last night I ran them side by side with 3 200ls...if you have two of these lights and mount them close to each other you get good spill and throw...they cast a nice ring and are simple to use...
They do kind of vibrate on the bars do to the mounts but not so bad to bug me...
As far as I am concerned, per $$, the flashlights are a dam good pick...
That web site is great...really really great!!! You should really ask a mod to change the title and lay off...

You don't like me and don't think I am helpful? I don't give a crap.

So tell me what a real bicycle lighting system is. A bike specific 'NightRider' light??
Actually I found the site very interesting. The pics he took were absolutely great, and the illumination of his front door at 30 to 50 feet were quite impressive for such a small flashlight. I can certainly see the concievability of something like this.
Here is a pic of my non bike specific homemade light I built out of a pvc pipe.

Uses a 20-watt MR-16 landscaping lamp at a 17 deg. beam spread. I can guarantee this light will light up the road for 20 mph night rides. Even in total darkness.
I'm not saying that Fenix sucks. It is a good light to get noticed bye and is able to hit reflectors from pretty far way but thats about it. It not going to light up anything unless you have like 4 or 6 of them going at one time. Some people talk as if it is some kind of a light cannon.
Next week my system will be arriving, a 12v, 35w MR11 flood that will be overvolted with a 14.4v battery. It will be used in unison with my NiteRider set up which has a 6v, 15w spot.

No, but you are knocking someone who was nice enough to make a very detailed and very helpful website about the lights. Why do you feel the need to make fun of him?

I'm glad the thread "Your mamma sucks" hasn't happened around here yet....

Exactly. My next light is going to be a Fenix after reading about his efforts earlier. And it's going to be powered by batteries charged in the battery charger I learned about in these posts too. Thanks to all who posted here - I'd much rather learn from others experiences than reinvent the wheel myself.
all I can think is that ...
people who ride hard and crash often enough probably want a bike specific setup with a low profile
and a manufacturer with experience in mtb 24 hour racing, so things like mounts, batteries and whatnot
are engineered for dirt, crud, crashes...etc.
I reckon if you don't actually plan to ride hard and crash then whatever light you want will float yer boat.
for me, personally, I want a light that has 'been around the block' and the maker knows what kind of crap can kill it, so it is built with some foresight into the abuse, and not some 'adapter to make a non-bike light work on a bike'
but hey whatever you want. I have a bunch of lights, but on the bike, they are bike-specific. I keep my flashlights at camp, or in the truck, near the bed...etc.
it just seems way too goofy to try to adapt barrel lights like the fenix to a bike. again, for the type of riding i do. it just looks like a twin mini gun mount. good for playing soldier I guess, not for riding 3 hours at full speed in the woods....
to each his own
The cool thing about Fenix, and other flashlight-specific companies, is that they focus on one thing only: Making a great light.
They tend to be one or 2 generations ahead of most "bike-specific" light companies in terms of runtime, power output, lens & bulb/emitter technology, etc.
Look at the NiteRider Newt Dual. A "blinding" 300 lumen. whoo. 2 fenix gets 350-400 lumens & same runtime for less $, on batteries you can buy at Walgreens!
oh and by the way, the Fenix lights are useful as flashlights also :) And say you crash off your mtb & scatter some gear, or lose a body part, you can whip the Fenix off the bike & go looking for it!
I like em alot, they are very very competitive as a bike light solution for the budget/simpliciy minded rider.
those who haven't tried, i suggest don't knock them. All of us who use them had to be "sold" on them too, and listen to us talk now. we wouldn't like them if there wasn't something to like.
Cheers

For me it was about cost and how I use the light. I only do road rides and only need a light for few months of the year. The 20mi course I ride nightly is reasonably lit and has bike lanes. The Fenix provides plenty of light to light the path and I can't out ride it a 23-25mph I ride. But best of all it is small, requires no additional battery pack and costs $60. I could not find a bike specific light that met the same requirements for less than $100.
BTW, Al and his website is what educated me to the Fenix so I was glad he posted and I do not regret purchasing my L2D Q5 at all.

Compared to your 35W overvolted MR11 (why not MR16?) sure a fenix doesn't kick out as many lumens but it puts it where I want it. I have _ONE_ little fenix strapped to my helmet and when my dinotte spits it's battery out of the holder on occasion I can keep riding easily and that is with the fenix on medium or high. Being a great flashlight is a bonus others have mentioned as well.
I do miss my overvolted floodlight sometimes in the cold. It was nice to warmup my fingers at stoplights :D
Problem with lights is I wonder if it is ever enough. I think if I did ride with 6 fenixes and went back to one i'd be saying omg how can you guys only ride with 1 or 2 it is impossible to see with less then 6 on turbo!

Thanks, Al. I have learned a ton from you over the past few months. I'm lucky enough to run with the DiNottes, but I have a Fenix L2D that I use for everything else now and I pack it for long trips on the bike and often recommend them. Personally, I get a kick out of anyone who has that much enthusiasm!

I don't wear a helmet so will never have use for a helmet flashlight. The reason I don't use MR16 bulbs is because the housing for my light only take MR11. I am completely uncreative and mechanically retarded to build anything by myself and besides, all the MR16 homemade systems look very ugly.

This forum would be pretty boring if everyone bought the most sensible, practical and obvious choice.
I enjoy reading about all the tweaking, kludging and thinking outside the box. True, it may not be "de rigueur", but it makes for a good read. Rock on, Al!

Dude listen, I am not a roadie and my city is a heaven for bicycles, I don't tink there is a more bicycle lovin city in America. All of my riding is on well paved, beautiful bike paths that are either on or off road, some even run along side rivers and lakes as you can see here:

I don't need a helmet but I do need a strong light because many of the bike paths aren't lit at night.

BTW - "Don't need a helmet" - Famous last words.
I also don't wear those ballerina tights either.

Even in total darkness.
Total darkness is not the upper limit. Streetlighted streets + rain + snow is. Any light that seems wicked under total darkness will probably fail in the above situation unless it REALLY is powerful.

Is this the same area that you ride in? yeah a bike path does not stop cars....
Also a few months ago a guy died in the turtle ridge area when he probably blew a flat tire descending down a hill in the city of irvine.
Also a few months ago in Irvine, a 30 year cycling veteran was struck by a mack truck while riding in the bike lane.
I just don't want to be the one finding you on back bay of newport with your head crushed in.
As you can see I also ride in that beloved city of yours...and 99% of the riders wear helmets.
How would you know it is me?

I don't wear a helmet either big boy...
I also ride on a paved bike trail that doesn't have any roads or possible way for cars to get in there. Worst thing that's gonna hit me is a rabbit. I'm also riding a junk bike and only average 11 mph on the ride. I think I can handle hitting the pavement at that speed and survive.
When I finally get a nicer bike and get that average up to 18-20 I might invest in one, but for now me and my roadmaster don't feel we need one. :p
Btw, I hate it when people on forums whine and preach about crap like this. What's funny is I could put a gun to my head and you wouldn't give a sh*t but heaven forbid I ride a few miles without a helmet. We're all adults here and I'm pretty sure able to analyze consequences and make informed decisions on our own...

Frankly, if you are wearing a helmet to protect you from cars you are misguided. It may help if you run into the side of the car going 15mph but in most car/bike accidents a helmet is not going to do much good, too much impact force. Now I wear a helmet every ride, not because I expect to get hit by a car but I do know low speed accidents happen, rocks on road, wet corners, slippery leaves etc. In a low speed crash the helmet can certainly save you from a bloody head wound or brain damage. These types of accidents occur much more frequently than car/bike accidents.

I was using those examples to show that the city he lives in is not as safe as he thinks it is. that is all. Of course a helmet is not going to save you from a car hit.
Like the previously poster said...low speed accidents do occur. I know of someone who was looking down at his pedals and he hit a curb going only aboug 5-10 mph...flew over the handlebars and hit his head on the curb. cracked his helmet...If he wasn't wearing a helmet it would have been his skull.
yamcha i'll know its you, because like i said 99% of irvine wears helmets.
Hey if you don't want to wear one, obviously you don't have to. but accidents are accidents because they are not something we expect.
So why do you need a light for? Your city has plenty of street lights and in the dark areas the moon will light your way yamcha
Listen, I want a super bright light because I think it's fun. I also want to get a 115 dB bike horn and my goal is not to get anyone's attention but to creep up on them and blast them to the moon. I want to see their fists clench, hairs rise and butt cheeks pucker up! I don't mind getting the finger either, I love it.
