Chances are, early on it will be ridiculously expensive or not live up to expectations or possibly both. (Considering Toshiba's reputation for quality, I'm betting on ridiculously expensive).

However, batteries that have become available recently seem to have made it reasonable to raise our expectations a lot about energy density, low cost, service life, etc. If this sort of fast-charge battery goes mainstream and becomes a competitive market the price will probably come down a lot.

Well, ridiculously expensive changes year by year. I'd think they'll be ridiculously expensive out of the gate as well, but you're right in the hope that it'll drive down the prices of other great batteries.

With the growing popularity of chemistries like LiFePO4, and the advent of batteries with competitive potential like the A123's and these new SCiB's, it seems like the market has the potential to get competitive, with all of the choice in high end chemistry - whereas a few years ago, you were either buying li-ion or going lower end.

yeah it does look like a nice battery and will most likely come with a nice price,lthium is very expensive now,in sydney they want $750 for 36 volt 10ah one,thats more then my whole bike cost.these toshiba ones will be alot more

If you want something now that charges 90% in 5 minutes, try DeWalt 36V tool packs...

advantages are they are fairly affordable, and available now, and they are fine for ultra-high charging and discharging currents. Disadvantages are that you will have to do tons of do-it-yourself work in order to get them going as good charge-in-5-minutes bike batteries.

Toshiba's batteries will probably start out really expensive and made in small quantities (i.e. you won't be able to find any even if you can afford them). Give them a year or two and probably tons of people will have them.
