I have a Sora rear deraileur that has done 19,000 km, recently I am having slight shifting problems. It would be perfect on a few cogs but as I shift towards smaller cogs, a very slight ticking sound occurs. Sometimes shfiting on small chainring would be right but would not be right after using the big chainring. There is also a 2-3mm play in the pivot joint.
Is the rear deraileur worn?
Have you tried oiling the derailleur? It may just need some maintenance, i.e. adjustment and oiling.
What about the pulleys? are the teeth on those well defined, or are they rounded out?

I once had a worn rear derailleur. It had 60 000 km, maybe more.
A sure sign: I was able to move it by hand, and there was enough play in the parallelogram that I could move it in and out by more than 1 cog.
In other words, if you try to move your derailleur by hand and it is steady, then it should be OK. Do as Chi suggested.
