To make matters worse you are accelerating downhill. Your thoughts?

aim for a soft grassy area...if none are around...aim for a large group of pedestrians to break you fall

shred it or crash. Either way, come to the realization that you're an idiot for riding without brakes.

Use my foot on the tire as a brake, if that didn't work, lowside it onto someone's front lawn :D

I was in that situation recently bombing the bike path that cuts through the UC Santa Cruz campus. Here is a youtube video of it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kYKu89DrQM\

(Damn... you can't embed youtube vids on this board?)

It's a pretty wild ride down that hill without brakes. My issue was too long of a spindle making my chain line untrue. I guess the chain must have hooked onto one of the teeth as it was ripped clear off my bike to my impending doom.

Something like this:

This happened to me once before. Luckily I had an umbrella with me. As I was flying down this hill with no brakes / chain I balanced myself up on my top tube, took a flying leap, opened my umbrella and glided safely to the ground unscathed.

Learned that s**t from Mary Poppins.

Jump off and hope you can run fast. Then look at all the scrapes and dings on your fancy brakeless bike.

Happened to me going down this:

Was testing out a new conversion and taking it really slow (my brakes were 15 miles away and were getting put on about 24 hours later).

Foot in back tire is the best thing to do, most people that ride brakeless bmx bikes only do this, so it shouldn't be too bad to use as a last resort if people rely on it as a primary source of braking.

Most people that ride brakeless BMX are also 13 years old, not yet through puberty, and pushing a 28/16 gear so they ain't moving very fast.

Sounds like pain to me.

Any of you foot jam heroes got youtube vids of that ****?

Blackberry?

Also, put more pressure on the front, and slalom down the hill to slow down, or foot in back wheel, like one of my brakeless BMX friends does.

you don't jam your foot, you stick it in the rear triangle with the tread facing the tire and slowly apply more and more pressure until it slows you down.

then you go on the internet and tell everyone how you cheated certain and unavoidable death and we all respect you for it.

foot jam. not hard.

+1 for the bmx-style stop, i've had to use that trick before when my chain came off.

now i ride w/ a front brake just in case.

It happened to me on a coaster brake bike where the wheel slid forward in the dropout and I threw my chain. I ended up dragging my foot on the ground and it worked out okay but the hill was pretty moderate. If it were steeper, I would probably ghostride the whip.

what is meant by chain malfunction? you break the chain, it comes off to one side, what? chances are you're going to eat ****, brake or not, if the chain wraps itself around the back cog/spokes. but nice troll-ish thread, kudos!

bmx stop (foot on rear wheel), aim carefully, bail if you must because the ground hurts less than a car.

I had a Ted Shred Tallbike for a while... chain malfunction or not, just jam the sneaker in between the brake bridge and rear tire. Of course, this bike had a top speed of about 4 mph, so...

Do you know how many pros ride brakeless? Pretty much all the Animal, Lotek, Mosh, and Fit team, to name a few.
