Southern California - Vote for the New Year Charity Ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Time to Vote!
If you signed up for the January 12th New Year Charity Ride (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=365168), now’s the time to vote on where you would like the proceeds to go. (This is a public poll – if you are not signed up for this ride, your vote will not count). Poll will close in one week because... well, cuz I can’t think that far in advance.

Here you go....

California Wildlife Center (http://www.californiawildlifecenter.org/cwc_concept_site/viewAbout/cwctAbout.htm?aboutIntro.htm#)
Located in the Santa Monica Mountains, the center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of a wide range of native species. It is currently the only licensed facility providing marine mammal response as well as full term rehabilitative care for native wildlife in Los Angeles and Orange counties and southern Ventura County. Equally important is the center’s role to promote protection of wild habitats and the environment through education, training and partnerships with the communities it serves.

Rover Rescue (http://www.roverrescue.com/)
Over 100 dogs are put to sleep in overcrowded Los Angeles area animal shelters every day. This non-profit organization was founded in 2001 to save as many homeless dogs as possible and place them in permanent and loving homes. In addition, Rover Rescue works hard in the community to reduce animal overpopulation and increase vital awareness about responsible pet ownership. They actively support spaying and neutering of all companion dogs and offer spay/neuter financial assistance to low-income families. 100% of their support comes from donations and volunteers.

Los Angeles Co. Bicycle Coalition (http://labike.org/)
Founded in 1998, the LACBC works to build a better, more bike-able Los Angeles County. LACBC is the only nonprofit, membership-based organization working exclusively for the millions of bicyclists in Los Angeles County. Through advocacy, education and outreach, Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition brings together the diverse bicycling community in a united mission to make the entire L.A. region a safe and enjoyable place to ride.

Heal The Bay (http://www.healthebay.org/)
Heal The Bay is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to making Southern California coastal waters and watersheds, including Santa Monica Bay, safe, healthy and clean. They use research, education, community action and advocacy to pursue their mission. Not so long ago, the Santa Monica Bay was treated daily as a dump site and marine life was suffering from some of the highest levels of contamination found anywhere along our nation’s coastline. But this small group swelled into an organization and movement that has done more to recover the Bay’s coastal environment than anyone could have expected. They showed that it’s not too late for Southern California, that no agency is too big to fight and win, that we can heal the environment and that we can heal the Bay.

I voted for the pooches. I love dogs and since I can't actually adopt a rescued one, this is my way of trying to help the little guys.

All outstanding choices!

Wildlife Rescue....they keep our mountains alive!
Pooches.........my wife has been a weekly volunteer at an animal rescue site for many years.
Heal the Bay...I was a volunteer with HtB at the beginning. They are awesome.
Bike Coalition....well, this is what I voted for. It's a bike ride, after all!

As the companion of the sweetest, smartest rescue dog on the planet, the choice was obvious for me.

Can my wife vote? It's half her money too. Better yet, she might actually ride a bike if it goes towards saving the puppies!

I already know how to ride a bike, and I already give money to heal the bay, so I voted for the woofs.

The top two choices seem pretty clear cut.
Would anybody object if we split the money between the two?

Can I buy a vote??:D

I thought about going with the Bicycle Coalition, but then I thought, wouldn't that basically be benefiting myself since I bike in LA? And is that charity, or fund raising? Pesky semantics. So I went for the fishies in the bay.;):D

That works for me. Helping animals is always my first choice, but since this is a bike forum...

I don't object at all. Any percentage to the furry faces makes me happy. :)

(come on, folks, they lick our ankles, love us unconditionally, and wag their tails at as even when we smell bad and are in a bad mood. :p)

I'm still upset that I can't buy a vote, and I guess signing up for the ride just to vote but not actually showing up would be plain wrong :D...

So I guess that I'll have to get someone to go in my stead...

Since you feel so strongly about it, there's nothing stopping you from setting up your own charity ride/event with whatever parameters you desire. :)

I don't know yet. I'll figure it out after the poll closes. I think everyone got a PM reminder.

Well now that you mention it... :D I am considering planning something, in the future (springtime?)... maybe involving some ice cream, rides, display tables... an All-Girl Alleycat race... ;)

But for now we have THIS ride for charity that sounds impeccably planned and organized.

and my choice is in the lead anyway :)

But wait...what do the non-riding help-the-cause Elves do exactly?

They get to vote...;)

It looks like almost everyone has voted.
So are we good with dividing the money between LACBC and Rover Rescue? :)

If you oppose, speak now or forever hold your peace!

Nothing against the dogs, but with the voting the way it is shouldn't it be at least a 60/40 or 75/25 split?

that is unless we can get a donation matching promise from someone mentioned in this article (http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/front/la-me-animalmoney19dec19,1,1868724.story?coll=la-headlines-frontpage)...

Sounds fair to me, Phil. How about 65/35? As far as I'm concerned, it's all good... :)

BTW, for the folks who asked me about donating but not riding, you can PayPal me and I will add your donation into the pot, or you can mail me a check made out to your preferred charity. PM me with whichever you would like to do, and whether you want your donation made public or kept private.

If there were a runoff between the top two, there's a good chance those who voted for the Wildlife Center and Heal The Bay might vote for RR - since they seem to be animal people. (I know I would) That would make it closer to 50/50.

Here's an idea... if anyone feels strongly about one group or another, you can write a check made out to the organization of your choice. I'll divvy up the rest. :)

12-19-07, 03:47 PM
Here's a better idea, how about you all give your cash to me and I'll divvy it up with Happy who will then give it to the four or five charities of her choice.

Simple.
