Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wow, I'm off by a week - Another honolulu ex-pat returning tomorrow 1/15 through 1/25 - any chance some of you want to try again next Saturday or Sunday?
Alternately are there some friendly group rides that take off from anyplace in town? We will be staying at my folks' house in Aina Haina so it's easy to get back to Diamond Head or wherever.
Hi ahpook,
Welcome back. We don't have any group rides this weekend, but I'm going to be climbing up Tantalus on Saturday morning. I'm going to try to do it twice. At my current weight, it won't be easy, but I'm going to try nonetheless. Drop me a PM if you'd be interested in joining me.
[stealth mode on] ahpook, if you can, take SM up on his offer of the Tantalus loop. I don't know what's out Aina Haina way, but if you want some Hwy 9-ish action, this'll be similar (yet different). I hope you didn't bring a NorCal jersey, lol! :p [/stealth mode off]
t4mv I did indeed bring my norcal jersey :)
I am down for a Tantalus loop on Saturday! My best friend in high school lived exactly in the middle of the loop so I know the road well but have not biked it.
Today was a little screwy due to jet lag but my plan is to get out and head towards Makapuu as many mornings as I can. My normal ride is my 20-mile SF Bay area commute and I get grumpy without an hour with a bike under me first thing in the morning.

If last week was any indication, you should be fine!
Madame Pobble and I will probably be up there too, weather permitting. We proceed at too, um, stately a pace to keep up with the serious people, but we'll be hard to miss, especially Madame P on her orange Felt w/ pink helmet. So say hi as you fly by...

sounds good, anyboy else gonna do the momentum ride?
Hey thanks Sprocket Man! That was great fun. Here's my shot from the top (disembodied elbow is Sprocket Man!)
Excellent, ahpook and SM! Until someone comes up with a ride that goes up Wilhelmina Rise over to the Kaneohe side :p Round Top/Tantalus is going to be right up there with my all time favorites.
Where was that pic taken?! Is that at the parking lot at the top (the real top, not the false top)? Did you guys throw in Mott Smith for good measure?
SM, you should go find your pics from last year that you posted, I thought those were great pics of the whole ride.
ahpook, how's the homecoming been, so far? It's a great time, ain't it?...kinda makes you want to miss the flight back. :D
t4mv that's from the narrow 1 lane bridge about .5 miles from the top. After the descent, SM went back around for another loop but I had to head back home.
It's been a great trip so far. I am getting an unexpected new perspective on Honolulu. I've been waking up early for bike rides and seeing familiar places from a different point of view -- like Tantalus, which I used to drive a few times a week taxi'ing a friend around who lived on top, but I never biked up before.
Also I have developed a taste for japanese style ramen-ya in the last year or so, so it's a ton of fun exploring little noodle shops I never noticed till I went looking.

Thanks for the picture, ahpook! I'll post your picture up a little later. Here are some of the older pictures that t4mv mentioned.

For today's ride, it was a little drizzly, but not too bad. ahpook was short on time so he wasn't able to go for a second loop, but I went up Mott Smith way on the second time around (it's steep!). I saw Pobble and his wife on my second loop and spent a little while talking with them. I felt pretty good after the ride, but in the afternoon my wife and daughter wanted to go for a long shopping marathon at Ala Moana and that's when my legs really felt the burn. Hopefully ahpook and I can go for another loop this week before he returns home.

How does Weds afternoon sound? I don't know any more than this link says but it looks like there's a group starting up at 4:30PM?

I found this when I was looking for info on whether you're allowed to ride over the Pali Hwy. I've been stretching my morning loop out and the next step is to go out to Waimanalo, but it seems kinda silly to go all that way and then just turn around and come back. On the other hand, biking over might be beyond silly and into 'straight stupid'.
That seems like a late start time; doesn't it get kinda dark shortly after 5-ish? Of course, since it's a weekday, I suppose you do have to take into consideration that (some) people have to work, huh? ;)
Have you guys tried the old Pali Hwy? I remember watching the Tour of Hawaii on TV back in late '93 and they went over parts of the old Pali Hwy, which seemed like a pretty cool thing to do, probably because it's now closed to traffic and is probably treacherous as all hell to go over since I could see it being all moss covered and pot-holed from neglect. But there wouldn't be any traffic.. :)
HBL should figure out a way to do a "rails-to-trails" -like thing to connect the windward and lee sides of the island. That would be a fun ride.

if anybody lives in or around kailua I'll be riding in kailua today from about 4:00-5:30 drop me a PM of you wanna join in.
Hi guys. I've done the HBL wednesday ride, it's a good ride, nice people etc leaves at 430 sharp. Sometimes there are 5-7 people and sometimes only the organizer. On saturday I rode tantalus starting at 430 and there was still time to ride home to Aiea afterwards without it getting dark so I don't think it's too late. Anyone going tonight?
jrn: yep i'll be there. bianchi as above, nor-cal jersey in case it's not obvious :)
EDIT Whups, guess not - I can't make it.
