Hey Oahu Cyclists,
I wanted to test the waters and see if anyone would be interested in joining up for a group road ride on January 13, 2008 (Sunday) in the morning. I was thinking about a ride from town to Waimanalo and back (about 35 miles or so). If you're interested, please post a comment here to let me know and we can firm up plans as we get towards the beginning of January. Everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans will be welcomed! I'll make sure that this is a "no drop" ride (no one gets left behind by themselves).
Thanks!

Well, let's hope that we have some good weather.

okay, JB and I will probably go! It sounds fun but I suck and he does not, so I'll plan on hanging back, I don't mind. He says he might invite two Marine friends, okay? I'll link them to this forum. We live on Pu'uikena and usually park at the park, but we can meet anywhere.
We will be fresh home from too much mainland holiday food.....

Start where? Maybe Kapiolani Park?
Warning: my go-fast bike is a Breezer, I don't own anything made of lycra, and my main BF hangout is 50+, so what you see is what you get :o If this means disqualification, no problem...

There's no dress code for this ride. In fact, I think I'll wear my green and purple muumuu.;)

Sure, as Rockabilly said, the more the merrier. I think that "no drop" rides are best. And by "no drop", it doesn't necessarily mean that everyone is riding together. However, if someone drops off the back of a pack, that they aren't left alone by themselves. Does that sound ok?
Let's meet at the Kapiolani Park fountain at 7:00am on January 13. Is everyone ok with riding out to the Makapuu Lighthouse Trail parking lot and back? Let's hope that the weather is better than what we've been having lately.

I ride alone all the time, I prefer it if I cannot keep up. I honestly don't think I can pull the hill coming back from Nalo town, that is a long steep grade with busy weekend drivers and not much of a bike lane.
I'll go from Kapiolani park to Ko-ko marina. JB needs the long ride, he is looking at doing some more tris.
We road yesterday and the wind almost blew me off the bridge, I kid you not. (Hawaii Kai, over the bay inlet) We only did 9 miles, the headwinds kicked my butt.
No thread jack intended, but, I'll be, well, not on Oahu on the 13th. Any rides before the 5th, maybe? Like out Kalanianaole Hwy to Hawaii Kai, or Tantalus-Round Top? :) Slow is good for me, too, because homey don't play the half wheeling game...

Hey t4mv,
When are you arriving in town? I'm up for a Tantalus ride. I live right by Punahou so just about anytime Sat or Sun morning, or sometimes on weekdays after 4:00 or so would work for me. I like slow too. I'm weighing in at a bloated 175 lbs. right now, so any other speed uphill isn't an option.

bloated? hell I'm 186
SM and rockabilly (and anyone else, too), if you folks are up for a ride, I'll be in town from 12/24 to 1/5 so pretty much any day in between that might work for a ride is as good a day as any. I'm right across the street from The School That Doesn't Require Shoes' track, so RT/Tantalus is the easiest ride for all of us, I guess, based upon what I've read so far. Rockabilly, if you've never gone up there, this is as good a time as any to give it a shot. It's been too long since I've ridden it w/ a computer, so I forget how long it is mileage-wise, but, from either side it's roughly a 40-45 minute climb to the top for me, and I know lots of folks go much faster. I know you don't have to worry about speed and there are lots of spots to stop for "historic points of interest" :D along the way.
The only fly in the ointment would be if there is still a road closure just below the Manoa valley overlook where the hillside washed out a couple years ago? I've just always ignored the signs and barricades and gone through if no one's there, but, we could also ride end to end, too, since it's a relatively short loop, so sometimes I just end up stringing a couple-three loops together just to put the miles or effort in.
I'm totally agreeable to whatever ride folks want to do since this is a social ride and I know I'm going to be poking along since it's the "off season" now. :) Mahalo

Last time I checked out the roadblock below the Manoa Lookout (about two months ago) it was still closed, and unlike in the past there was no way to get around it. There was a story in the paper last month saying that they MIGHT be able to reopen it by the end of the year if the weather stayed dry, so I guess we can forget about that one for a while:rolleyes:... The Road Closed signs are still up, but I've always preferred going up the Ewa side and coming down the same way anyhow. It's about 5 miles to the top.
I also live near Shoeless Academy and ride Tantalus regularly, but leisurely, on the aforementioned Breezer. Up for a ride just about any Sat or Sun, but alas I'll be out of town just about the same days that t4mv will be here. Except that I'm not leaving til the 25th, so definitely hoping to get an Xmas morning ride in...
BTW Kapiolani Fountain at 7 works fine for me next month... I may also just go as far as Hawaii Kai.
Anyone up for a Christmas morning ride w/ Pobble? According to our friends at NOAA, here's the forecast for Christmas day:
Christmas Day: A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly cloudy, with a high near 82. East wind around 14 mph.
I'm going to pull the bike out and put some air back in the tires and make sure the chain's halfway decent and I'm good to go. I'll try and do that Mon PM after we get in. 'Can't wait...

I won't be able to ride with you two on Christmas morning but are t4mv or anyone else up for a ride up Tantalus and/or out to Hawaii Kai on the morning of Dec 29?
Pobble, if it's not raining Christmas AM, 'you want to do the RT/Tantalus loop?
Sprocket Man, I'm up for a Sat AM ride on the 29th; hopefully we don't have family stuff planned, but I'm game for a ride, for sure. Let me know what works for you folks. Thanks.

Sure - can meet you by the big ear pod tree near the corner of Makiki St and Makiki Heights Drive, a block mauka of Nehoa St. Madame Pobble may also attend, which will ensure a very leisurely ascent. What time is good for you?
Pobble, I'm there! 'just waiting for the gate agent to call our boarding for Hawaiian back to the Islands...

see you in the AM.

7:30 a.m. UPDATE -- Pretty gnarly out there right now!
Haha, Pobble, was that a fun ride or what? :D Honestly, I can't think of anywhere else that you can go for a ride, get soaked to the skin, ride through the views we have, and not have an ear to ear grin on your face. Thanks for coming out this AM and making it a really fun ride. Safe travels on your holiday get togethers.

Also, if you're interested, t4mv and I probably doing another Tantalus ride this Saturday 1/5, weather permitting. We'll be meeting at the park next to the pump station at the bottom of Tantalus (right near Hanahaouli School) at 8 am. Please drop a note to let me know if you'd like to join us and what kind of bike you'll be riding so I know how to identify you. Hope you can join us!

Hey, sorry, didn't see this in time. Hope you had fun!
Howzit, everyone! I'd like to thank Pobble and Sprocket Man for taking time out of their busy schedules to hook up with me over the holidays to ride the RT-Tantalus loop, I really enjoyed the company and even the rain :), and as always the views are incomparable to anywhere else, so from a sadly displaced ex-pat, I say again, "Lucky you live Hawaii"
Y'all should do your best to make it out for the ride next Sunday; it doesn't matter what speed you go, the name of the game is socializing, and I'll be there in spirit with you folks. Rubber side down!

And thank you too! I'm going to make the Mott-Smith Drive section a regular part of my Tantalus ride from now on.
So far, here are the people who have shown interest in a January 13 group ride:
1. Rockabilly808
2. Pobble.808
3. Catherine96821 (along with her husband and 2 friends)
4. Kimmitt
I will be there and my wife may join up as well. Rather than go all the way to Makapuu Lighthouse, is it alright if we just turn around at Lunalilo Home Road across the street from Kaiser High School? The faster group can go further if they want and then just meet us back at the fountain.
Let's meet at the Kapiolani Fountain at 7am on Jan. 13. If any more out there want to join up, please feel free. It should be fun.
Wish I could make it but Sundays is my standing 0630 T-Time.. would be up for some Sat rides in the future.. getting sick of riding the Lanakai Loop from base by myself. :)

We are planning on coming (Kapiolani park?)
JB is trying to invite a couple Marines maybe, so we need the final details if you don't mind. I'll probably drop (out) ya'll at Ko-ko marina, but JB is in for the big hill.
We have a big b-day party Sat night and I hope I can get up....

Hi Catherine - glad to hear you and your crew are planning to make it. We're going to be meeting at the fountain at Kapiolani park at 7am. The fountain is across the street (and a little ways east) of Kaimana Beach. Here's a picture (but I don't think there's any water there anymore):

I'm the local guy with a black Cervelo and red helmet. My wife is a little ambivalent about coming but hopefully she'll be there. By all means, please tell JB to bring as many friends as he wants. The more the merrier.
Have fun at your party on Saturday night and don't hold back on the booze. Riding a bike is a surefire hangover cure (or so I've heard). I'll PM you my cellphone #.

No party, we had the date wrong. Tell wifey to come, I am slow and that way I will have company. (we rode today, 12 mile loop through Kahala, checked out the Sony open) I had a wreck because my chain jumped off as I mashed up a little hill. ???
We will be there, those other two Marines ride with momentum at 7 every Saturday.

Oh it was great!
The fastest group reported a top speed of 35 mph coming down Diamond Head, JB reports.
All I can say about me was that my HR was up to 178 which is over my max, and I did not die. (This hill in Kahala on the return)
It was about right (in the slower group) because my rider buds signal very well and let me stop and sip water occasionally.
I am still blissful and JB is washing his helmet with Windex.
Hope we go again, I felt safer in a small group regarding the cars and starting early is great because not much traffic on Sundays. And the headwinds were not whipped up yet.
The only reason I could get up at 6 am is that I did not want to face the public humiliation of being a no-show here, lol.
Thanks to all...

My wife and I really enjoyed the ride! Here's who showed up:
Catherine and JB, Pobble, Kimmitt, my wife and I. On the way out, JB and I stuck together while Catherine, Pobble, Kimmitt and my wife formed a second group. The winds were practically nonexistant for most of the way out. We all met up near Roy's in Hawaii Kai. On the way back, JB took off ahead, Kimmitt and I formed a second group and Catherine, Pobble and my wife were right behind.
rockabilly808, we waited at the fountain for a little while but when you didn't show, I figured you might still be recovering. You ok?
If I recall correctly, this was the longest ride yet for Kimmitt and Catherine. Great job!
Mahalo to all who showed up. To quote Kimmitt, "Good times. . ."
Wow, I'm off by a week - Another honolulu ex-pat returning tomorrow 1/15 through 1/25 - any chance some of you want to try again next Saturday or Sunday?
Alternately are there some friendly group rides that take off from anyplace in town? We will be staying at my folks' house in Aina Haina so it's easy to get back to Diamond Head or wherever.

I would LOVE to see that! When he mentioned it to me, I figured the trailer would be kind of small - maybe schlep 30-40 lbs or so. I asked him what the capacity was - 250 lbs! I'm currently 179 lbs. If Kimmit is willing to try it, I'd be willing to sit in the trailer while he pulls me:).

Once a month would be nice. I'll ride with JB - he's a speedster and will really help me get ready for racing.
And regarding your soreness, try Assos Chamois Creme. I had Lois try some and she said it made a big difference. It feels like an Altoid inside of your shorts. At first, it's shockingly cool, then it kind of numbs the sensitive areas. Great stuff.
