General Cycling Discussion - bike repaint

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
My Gunnar roadie is looking pretty worn and i'd like to have it repainted.Gunnar charges $350w/ clear which is more than i want to spend.Anyone know of any good bike painters?I'd like it stripped, primed painted, decals installed and cleared.
350 bucks just for a repaint???
that's too much, i think..
You can strip down the paint yourself.. What's the frame material?
I had a frame painted, total cost was 20 bucks.. BTW, we used two colors, black and Ti. decals cost another 10 bucks..
we used anzhal urethane paint.
2 coats primer, 5coats urethane, then 4 coats clearcoat..
The decals were laced before the last 2 coats of clear coat..

Yeah......do it yourself.... I just stripped and primed my Bianchi Pista. Still deciding on color.... no rush on this frame...
What brand of paint do you guys use on your frames?

anzhal, du pont...
i only use urethane.. acryllic is good, but not as good as urethane in my opinion..
And you get your paints at an auto paint store? or somewhere else? Sorry for the dumb questions, but I just don't know.

You can get auto paint from any paint "house", or in any hardware store and auto parts shop. These are available in 0.25 Li, 0.5Li, .75Li, 1Li, 3.8Li cans.
You will also need a compressor and an airbrush too. You only need the one used to paint model cars, etc. I don't think you need the prof. stuff though unless you will be doing this a lot. But who knows;) .

How much does that stuff typically cost?

well, it really depends on the make, color, texture, etc.
Some paints are twice as expensive as others. Anyway, when i had mine painted, all materials including paint (primer, clearcoat, etc), sandpaper, misc. amounted to about 800 pesos, that's about $16 US. BTW, i used Anzhal urethane.
If you have the right tools/equipment, it would be practical to do it yourself. A decent airbrush/spray will cost about $20-$25. A portable compressor will go up to $60. I think it is a good investment, and just after a few practice sprays you will be on your way. Model airbrushes come with instruction manuals, I think it would be enough to keep you going.
Hmmm. I'll have to think about that. I'm not an impulsive buyer. It might be a good investment. So, I could find this stuff at a hobby store? We have a place nearby called Hobby Lobby. Or is there somewhere else good to check out a compressor and airbrush?
Well thats a good idea but i'm really wanting a pro to paint it.

Kerk, you can get these auto paints put into spray cans at the store, and you can, with careful prep and application, get a beautiful job this way. You don't need an airbrush or any other kind of spraygun, or compressor. BTW, using an airbrush would take a long time to paint a bike, a detail spraygun would make much more sense IMO.
Really! I did not know that. Now that sounds good. I'll be heading to the auto paint store tomorrow to explore that option. Thanks!!
