Anyone got em on a fg or ss? Waiting for a longer axle from QPB
before I can install one on one of my bikes.

I am hoping to see one on my bike one of these days. I'm planning on running it with 48cm Nitto 177s to give me some room and leverage to carry some ****.

Last year I responded to an ad on Craigslist for an old Centurion ladies frame I wanted to pick up for my then GF. Turned out it was the dude from Cetma. He offered to sell me a rack, cheaper than what he sells them for now, and I declined. Now Im kicking myself for not picking up the gold one he had.

That was my experience. Dude makes em by hand welding--
one at a time. Worth it.

man, that'd be great for a work bike... i wonder how well it'd work with bullhorns though.

I have one, and I didn't think it worked too well with drops. Maybe it'd be slighting improved with bullhorns, since they're less ....errr.... drop? But still, I think that having those two protruding horns is going to limit what you can carry with it, especially if you're a shorter rider.

So while it can be done, I think that flats/drops are actually the best option for this (or any, really) front rack.

Yo,

Can I use your's for a template when I start welding mine? :D

^ I don't see why not--might want to ask Lane at Cetma--seems like he would
be down, and the design isn't proprietary as far as I know--

Here's (http://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2007/12/porteur-rack-at-work.html) a different rack, but the same idea.

I'm sure it isn't and I wouldn't sell them anyway. Just want to make one for myself and maybe a buddy or two.

considering that it is made of 4130 steel by hand, and powdercoated I have to
disagree. Also when used for the intended purpose you can't see much of the rack--

Nitto racks run in the 80 to 100 buck range-- rather than use some effete piece of aluminum
that will get banged up I'd rather use a CETMA

I'm curious what comparable racks are cheaper? I am aware of Wald baskets, but I don't know of another flat rack like the CETMA for anything approaching this price.

There are no comparable racks that are cheaper. If you want to go a little higher up in price, Velo Orange makes some beautiful polished steel ones for $140 and $155. But there's nothing cheaper in this style.

I disagree that the CETMA racks are overpriced. In fact, since they are the cheapest of their kind and extremely durable (I have one on my townie, need to take photos) CETMA racks are the best value out there.

I have seen them with silly markups at shops, but direct from CETMA they are quite reasonably priced.

For heavy hauling, these might make some sense. For general duty, like grocery shopping, I'm all about Wald racks. Wald racks look traditional, are very inexpensive, last for years, and are made in America.

anybody ever use these on oversized handlebars??????? lane hasn't responded to my 3-4 emails

Suttree
12-25-07, 04:16 AM
^ No. That said I'm thinking they would work--the
clamps have a lot of range of adjustment. Lane
doesn't seem that responsive by e-mail but the racks
are solid. If you want to check out a CETMA to see
if it would work let me know--I'm in the Sacto area--
and have one that I haven't installed.

They suck with drops (would be same issue with horns) cause the rack is in b/t so you can't put on a load wider than your bars. Works good with flatbars/risers.

they are overpriced for what they are. taking materials and labor into consideration i wouldn't expect tp pay more than $50 or so for them. $100 is too much for a few rods welded to a few plates

so...i'd like to see if anyone can weld something similar? i'd try if i could weld. hell, if i could weld, i'd do this and a billion other things, like make a long-distance fork by welding all the forks in my kitchen together.

Well, until there's some comparable for less money, I fail to see how this is over-priced. Maybe it's too expensive for you, but it's certainly not over-priced.

I'm planning to get 48cm drops (Nitto 177) and a 5 rail, so I should have some room.

There is no end to what you can do if you know how to weld. It's seriously more important to me than almost any skill I possess. I would almost rather be able to weld than to read.

cuz of the angle of the stays? I wonder if the weak angle is offset by the heavy duty stay--
is that rack aluminum or steel? Looks like anodized aluminum?
