Are there any MR11 LED bulbs out there that are decently bright and have a glass or plastic cover? I want to try one in my Planet Bike Alias. Would they work on the three different power and one blinking settings?

Does anyone have any good ideas for finding or making a battery pack with 4 individual NiMH D cells? REI has a water bottle cage container that looks interesting but may be too small for a D pack.

For the battery holders, try mouser.com and search "battery holders 4xD". They have a few different configurations.

+1 for mouser.com
There happy to sell you just one or two items. I built a 4 "D" battery pack using 2 holders that hold 2 "D" size batteries. This allows different mounting options than just one holder for 4 "D" batteries. If your going to be using rechargeable batteries you don't really need holders. Order batteries with solder tabs. This allows gluing the batteries to each other and soldering wire to the tabs in the required configuration. You'll never have trouble with poor connections if you do it that way. This also allows cutting off the upper part of an old water bottle, insert the batteries into the bottle with some foam to secure and cushion them, and finally gluing the top back on the water bottle using plastic weld epoxy.

I tried this one (MR11-WHP1) at http://superbrightleds.com/specs/MR11-WHPx.htm. It is ok, very bright see-me type light. The problem is the 150° beam spread; it really doesn't have much throw. I'm considering it only for my fair-weather bike, for just-in-case I get caught out after dark.
