Where is a good place to meet for a ride to the Rose Parade? Encanto Park in Duarte?
Where would be a good place to watch the parade?

The best place to watch it is on tv.
It's insane around here from the night before the parade, I don't know if I would want to ride a bike anywhere near here.

Where I grew up, my street was part of the staging area (it parallels Orange Grove). I've had enough Rose Parade to last a lifetime! :p:rolleyes:

This is really depressing: stay away from Pasadena, watch the parade on TV, sick of Rose parade, when is the Doo-Da...
Doesn't anyone like to go to the Rose Parade anymore??

I would be impressed if you could manage to ride in the parade (as in, break through the barriers, and hold an impromptu road race during the parade). Your only obstacles would be marching bands and horse ****, really. The floats are easy to pass.
Otherwise, dullsville. If you're native enough, you don't even bother thinking about the Rose Parade (you go skiing/snowboarding instead!)

My wife is going to the parade, she did last year, too... However, she's NOT riding a bike to it.

Or you head to Manhattan Beach for the Holiday Ride and join hundreds of roadies racing balls-out to the top of Mandeville Canyon.
(I'll just watch from a respectful distance)

Well, I'm not really a "parade" kind of gal to be truthful. And yes, TONS of people like to go the Parade. Like John mentioned, it's a zoo in Pasadena the night before and day of. As to why you're depressed...????

The Doo Dah Parade was the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Mt Wilson is a good place to Watch the Rose Parade. You are eye level with the Stealth Bomber:D Seriously, the L.A. Wheelmen ride to the Parade from Griffith Park I think.

I've found that those racers generally don't want to be bothered when it comes to whipping their tube out. Now, if you want to help hold while I pump, I'm sure that will work fine. Get with the program, Happy, or I'll have delegate you to just holding the rim steady.

Well, I find that fascinating because I knew (no, I didn't have a lebsbian fling with her) a woman in college who did that. It was creepy. We'd (a group of friends) would all be at a pub and she'd just start meowing, licking the backs of her hands and rubbing up against women, purring (rolling her r's). Needless to say, it created drama when she rubbed up against the wrong Redneck's girlfriend.

Thankfully, mine stuck mainly to clawing gestures, hissing, and meowing. She took dance, so her poses were somewhat sultry like that pic. That's why it reminded me of her.
fwiw she is now a physical therapist and she volunteered to give messages at the AIDS/Lifecycle ride a couple years back. We all did silly things in high school, and possibly college too.

If they invited only marching bands from the deep south and/or traditionally black colleges, then I'd make an effort to go. Those bands have drumlines, musical stylin' and marching flare that'll blow you away!

I have to disagree with everyone. I think the Rose Parade is still a great thing to go to. I'm not sure about taking bikes - the parade route itself is pretty crowded, and I don't know any place off the route where you can safely stash the bikes. Riding should be no problem, though. Just be aware that a lot of the drivers don't know where they are going.
The only places I have ever watched it (besides bleachers) are on Orange Grove Av., where you pretty much have to stay overnight to get a spot, and on Colorado a couple blocks west of Lake. There is a Target store there that is a few steps up from the street, so you can get a better view. But just about anywhere should be okay, except right at the beginning where the TV cameras are. Best to get there about an hour before the parade comes by, which is 8:00 at the start and maybe 10 at the end.
Encanto Park sounds good. As you get closer to the parade you want to make your way along Foothill/Walnut.
Let us know how it goes!
The best think I have done is to go the following day to Victory Park and see the floats..you can get right up close to them and even smell the flowers....
By all means, do go to the Rose Parade. Ride your bike over and take a folding chair that you can carry over a shoulder. Try Fair Oaks and Colorado, but get there early, on the north side of the street across from the bleachers. There is an incline coming down from Orange Grove, so it gives you a good view of what's coming, and take your bike with you, you can keep it in sight on the sidewalk. Have fun and enjoy.:)

Okay, for those of you going to the Rose Parade tomorrow, please take pics and post here if you can. Even those of us who don't like actually attending the parade do like to see pics. :)

As an alternative, if you don't want to be fighting with a million other spectators on Colorado Blvd, you can always view the floats on the 2nd or 3rd, at Victory Park. They usually park the floats there for a couple days after the parade, for everyone to view, take close up pictures, etc ...
Anybody on here work on any floats?

I'll be there tomorrow morning to take my daughter to watch, but we're going by car. If you want to ride, another option is to travel south of the route (via California), and then head up on one of the streets.
I'm fortunate because my work has a Pasadena office on Hudson/Green, so I can park there and just walk up a block to Colorado. I'm bringing my stepladder with me.
I grew up on Wilson in between Union/Walnut, so I used to walk down the street with my parents to watch the darn thing - after a few years of it as a kid, I would get bored with it myself. Although it was entertaining to see a 8-ish year old brat sitting on the pedestrian part of the streetlight (the one with the blinking red hand/white pedestrian light) whine and wiggle and losing his balance and falling off (luckily his dad caught him by the leg). I couldn't help bust out laughing.
Anyways, best of luck to you! If you want some excitement, I double dog dare you to ride down Colorado starting at the Norton Simon Museum all the way to Allen TONIGHT at 11pm!!

I helped one year with the floats. I also marched in the parade (white boots and miniskirt) eons ago...I have a pix somewhere....:D
When my daughter was little we had friends who lived right on the parade route and loved the Rose Parade. They set up chairs the day before and paid some college students to spend the night camping out with them. It was their family reunion of sorts. All kinds of relatives and friends came by or visited from out of town. We'd roll over about 8am the day of the parade for coffee and bearclaws...hang out, then all watch the parade ringside.
That was the way to do it...it pays to be well-connected ;)
Get your sleeping bags out...:)

Today for sure - Rose Bowl game's at 1:30, and I'm sure it's pretty crazy around there already.
The parade route is going to be an absolute mess for the next few days debris-wise - usually the cleaning crews don't finish up for at least 2 days. Especially as most of the trash is going to be on the right next to the curb, riding Colorado Blvd. might be a little hairy.

I won't be taking any pictures of the parade - I'm sure you'll see plenty of it on NBC, ABC, KTLA, FOX, etc., etc. - I'll probably be busy making sure my kid doesn't fall off the ladder . . . ;)

I usually stayed away from Colarado Blvd on Jan 1st, but tomorrow I'll be taking my boy & girl to the Rose Parade for their first time, that makes me excited. We'll be on S. Orangegrove. Have fun!
