And I can't decide whether I like it or I think it's a POS.

I was told at the LBS that this is essentially a messenger bike, and the incredibly narrow handlebars make it easier to slip through lanes of traffic in NYC.

Which is kind of interesting, because (to my knowledge) messengers do not exactly love taxis, so to make a bike which is painted like a taxi is rather strange, no?

But part of me thinks it's fun-looking.

I need another beer.

It's the beer goggles. The yellow of the beer makes the yellow bike look white.

Is it fixed? It does have a rear brake. How much does it cost?

I like the way Specialized came out with all the different city theme Langsters (http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=32712). The standard one pretty nice too.

But I think I like this one (http://www.surlybikes.com/steamroller_comp.html) that a magnet will stick to better.

Isn't that some kind of marketing gimick where the bike has a different paint scheme for each city?

Seriously though, I think the bike looks sweet!

At the risk of being classified as a "cranky old fart" (probably true) WhoTF would want a fixed gear bike to ride around on in the city???Last one I rode was in '52 or so and I almost went over the bars....Granted one could be trained to ride one,,, but why???

Couldn't agree more. I've always wondered why fixies are associated with city riding...worst imaginable set up for that environment, IMHO.

I look at road bikes and think it might be nice to have one, for the occasional ride.
I look at mountain bikes and think those look comfortable and I love the gearing, might be nice to have one.
I look at recumbent trikes and think those sure would make for comfortable rides and it would be nice to have one.
I look at fixies and think there is no way I'd want to ride one anywhere, anytime. A single-speed freewheel, okay, I could see riding one of those around a city park.

I like coasting and lower gears too much

But I do respect people who can ride them on hills. And wish I was in condition to pull it off.

It looks like fun to me. I don't think I would try riding one in the city, at least not before I became very adept at riding it. I think it is the pure mechanical simplicity that appeals to me. Who knows? Once I try one I may hate it, but I do want to try it.

Digital Gee

As I understand it, it can be a freewheel as well. The rider has the option.

BluesDawg

Probably a flip-flop hub. A fixed cog on one side and a freewheel on the other side.

I like the simple look and have been tempted to build one up for cheap. But, so far, sound logic has stepped in.

For some weird reason I like that taxi paint job.

I turned my old MASI ('77) into a single speed, and I love it for recovery rides (16t x 42t) because it keeps me from riding too fast for good recovery.

However, and it's a big HOWEVER, I would not even consider making it a fixie . . . far to dangerous for my limited abilities with such things! And yes, I did race on the Velodrome when I was younger (30's) but that is a very different enviroment than streets, roads or MUP's.

Coasting is the reward for the work of pedaling. Which I why I hate running and swimming...no coasting!
