I did a search on what books to buy and couldn't find anything :(
Can someone recommend any training books to get me started on a program, I want to get ready for some serious riding and competitions in the spring :)

Doh! found alot by typing in "training books"
I ordered the Greg LeMond book as it seems to get good reviews.
Sorry for not looking good enough, after all, my hero is Homer Simpson :-]

Cyclist's Training Bible by Joe Friel .... fubar had one up on BicycleBid a while back, don't know if it's still there or if he still has it but it might be worth looking into. This goes through periodization and making your own annual training plan based on when you want to peak, etc.

Serious Cycling by Edmund Burke is also worth a read.

I have both and have read them both a couple times, they're the ones I would recommend. I have read a few others and didn't find them to be all that helpful compared to the above mentioned two. Hope this helps, if you want more info about either one, let me know.

I second the Joe Friel book. It's great. Also, I second the "Serious Cycling" by Ed Burke. I'll add on some more recommendations:

"The Heart Rate Monitor Book", by Sally Edwards (read this before reading any other books about training with heart rate monitors)

"High Tech Cycling", by Ed Burke

"Bicycling Medicine : Cycling Nutrition, Physiology, Injury Prevention and Treatment For Riders of All Levels", by Arnie Baker

"Heart Zone Training", by Sally Edwards

"Periodization: Theory and Methodology of Training", by Tudor O. Bompa

"Periodization Training for Sports", by Tudor Bompa

"The Heart Rate Monitor Book for Outdoor and Indoor Cyclists", by Sally Reed/Sally Edwards- for building progressive training program and using the 25 workouts described to progress through your periodization program.

That should be enough to get you started, I think.
