While not that many are familiar with the KHS Urban Xtreme (MSRP $739), those who are seem highly impressed. Those who are familiar with the Jamis Coda Comp (MSRP $800) and Jamis Coda Sport (MSRP $600) seem torn on whether the upgrade is worth the price between those two. On paper and based on recommendations, I am leaning toward the KHS Urban Xtreme - as a hybrid bicycle that will be used mostly on pavement but hopefully on some light trails and paths without having to change the setup - especially since it can be obtained in my city at a local bike shop with the best mechanic around (while I have to go to another city for the closest Jamis dealer).

I realize that test rides will make a huge difference in deciding. But based on experience and the components offered, which would posters choose? Thanks.

Where would you buy them?

KHS is available through a local bicycle shop here in Pasadena whose owner has the reputation for being a fantastic mechanic and very easy and fair to deal with. The closest Jamis dealer is a high-end bicycle shop in Hollywood (about 30 minutes away).

All else being equal, that would sure tend to tip the scales in favor of the KHS.

I have a Jamis Quest, I love it,they are an underated company, after putting 2500 miles on it i put S&S couplers on the frame, all new Campy Chours running gear and used it for a travel bike, it fits into one of the S&S boxes that goes as luggage.. Bought my son in law a coda comp for xmas last year, he wanted something a bit less racey ,he loves it ! if i was getting another flat bar bike it would be a Jamis Coda Comp, no question !

Once you have got the bike- the next thing to think of is the service you can get from your LBS. Unless you are a competent mechanic- I would opt for the brand that your local bike shop sells. But no matter how good the service is- it is no good unless you are happy with the ride of the bike.

So test ride all the models and if they are about the same with no preference- then go to your LBS.

If you asking for a preference- I would look closely at the Coda Comp. Better wheels better gearing for hills- if you have any in your area- and a better overrall spec of the bike. But it still boils down to that test ride.
