When was the last time you heard a bicyclist exceeding 80 mph solely by pedaling over a level road surface without any wind? How about maintaining a 78.6 mph speed over the course of one mile? Well, this and more happened this week on a closed stretch of highway near Battle Mountain, Nevada at the 2001 World Human Powered Speed Challenge.

Check it out at:

Talk about pushing the envelope for human speed! Of course, these streamliners resemble a normal bike about as much as a Formula One racer does the average Honda. Still, one wonders at what technical advancement in recumbent design may eventually trickle down to the consumer level but, hey, that's why Honda races cars, right?

I thought about posting this on the Racing Forum but I know how sensitive some of those TDF/UCI types are about "in-line wheelchairs!";)

Yeah those bikes are souped up. The British entry, called BlueHorizan,( or BlueYonder? ) cost a cool quarter million to make!!

And look at the weight of some of the machines, under 25lbs... and the gearing! *droool* :)
