Ok, is there a way to prevent that unbearable pain that occurs when you get home from a winter training ride and your hands got a little too cold? The first 5 minutes after I get home, it feels like somebody smashed both of my hands with a sledge.

Wear warmer gloves.

What are you wearing for gloves and in what temps?

Usually, when I'm not dressed appropriately for the conditions, I experience that pain in my hands or feet as they start to go into a frostnip situation while I'm still outside ... then they go numb ... and then later when they thaw they become very painful again. So I experience that pain twice. Good incentive to dress appropriately for the situation.

Go with water proof ski gloves, preferably with the water/wind proof material only on the knuckle side.

I've got a pair, they keep my hands nice and warm, except they take half a day to dry out.

Yeah that is not a good situation your putting yourself in. The pain you're feeling is blood returning to an area that was once shunting off.It you body's natural defense to hypothermia (on a small scale). Don't want to get into specifics here but read up on it, pretty interesting how the body works.
