Just rode in the NYC Transportation Alternatives century ride through the five boroughs yesterday. Below is my review of the experience.
Pros:
1. Good weather.
2. Light traffic (for NYC) on most streets.
3. Interesting scenery and views.
4. Fairly well organized.
5. Friendly staff at rest stops.
Cons:
1. Road conditions were about 10% good, 60% poor, 30% third world.
2. Significant portion run over some of the most dangerous bike paths I've ever encountered.
3. The TriBorough bridge bikeway is about 24 inches wide, has 4 sets of stairs, and a low railing. Imagine that with a huge group of riders.
4. Filthy toilets at most rest stops.
5. Poor marking of route in places.
6. Many riders that set a horrible example of dangerous and rude cycling for drivers.
Am I glad I did it? Yes. Would I do it again. NO.
