I just heard this on local AM radio 760. 10 AM this morning, South Grade Rd. Details when I hear them.

EDIT: [paste from local news] A bicyclist died today on East Grade Road, on Palomar Mountain, authorities said. Authorities were called at 10:30 a.m., after the bicyclist was found lying in the roadway near Canfield Road, the California Highway Patrol reported. Medics attempted CPR on the bicyclist, who was unresponsive, but the victim was pronounced dead, the highway patrol said. "Medical reasons" may have contributed to the bicyclist's death, no further details were immediately available, authorities said.

EDIT 2: [paste from NC Times 23:20] A 51-year-old bicyclist died Sunday on Palomar Mountain of what is believed to be natural causes, authorities said. The bicyclist ---- identified as Jeff Deardoff, of Chula Vista ---- apparently collapsed while riding, an investigator for the county medical examiner's office said. Authorities were called at 10:30 a.m., after Deardoff was found lying on East Grade Road, near Canfield Road, the California Highway Patrol reported. Medics attempted to resuscitate Deardoff, who was unresponsive, authorities said. He was pronounced dead, the Highway Patrol said. Deardoff is survived by his sister, the medical examiner's investigator said.

at least he died doing what he loved

at least he died doing what he loved

are you sure?

if i ever died while riding my bike and someone said that about me, i'd probably be a little pissed.

(ok, maybe not pissed, but just because i ride my bike a lot doesn't mean it's "what i love doing")

I'm not going to get into this. Too much ignorance reflected

Sorry to hear the sad news. What a tragedy.

Nachoman

I wonder how it happened. Although I try and be safe, I always want to know how I can be safer.

Don't have a heart attack, stroke, or aneurysm on the bike. This cyclist was most likely as safe as any of us...his body just gave out somehow.

I agree w/Mo'Phat, but I also agree with ovoleg,

We all have to die someday, somehow, and to die climbing Palomar would be one of my first choices!

I can't speak for this guy, but if I ever die on the bike or during sex, I died happy.

My condolences are for the rider's family.

Grumpy Pig

I heard that the guy did 1:30 from the taco stand to the top. I'm not sure how they got the info, I'm guessing his computer.

If you don't love cycling, I seriously doubt you would be anywhere near Mt. Palomar. I would understand your argument if he was on the Coronado strand.
Either way, condolences to his family.

RIP .... Is Palomar a monster climb? Please excuse my not knowing.

Yes it is.

Is not East Grade road the easier way up. Our normal route was to come up from Pala and exit east towards Lake Henneshaw. Coming from the west it is pretty steep. From the East not so steep. This is sad news. Please keep us posted.

Chucklehead hates riding his bike. He's good at it, though...so he feels like he owes it to humanity to continue.

/only slightly joking. He's rather cynical...that Chucklehead.

East Grade is easier...it's less elevation, in about the same mileage...from what I remember.
