Bicycle Mechanics - Old and new crank/BB compatibility
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I'm just curious and rather than disassemble two perfectly good bikes to try it, I though I'd ask the braintrust.
I have an old Japanese bike (early 80s) with a rather bizarre crank. I have a spare 2007 Ultegra crank (with the outboards bearings) that I would consider installing. Has anyone tried this?

Is the bottom bracket shell bizarre too? If not, it will work.
The crank is a problem because the BCD is something odd like 84, and it's getting hard finding replacement rings. A new Ultegra crank would be far easier to find rings for. And probably lighter.
Thanks for the info, now all I gotta do is get a 25 year old crank off!
