Hi everyone, I'm getting back into road riding and need to build up some base miles. I would like to do it with some people, an event to be fun!
Also any group rides going on?

I'm not into joining any clubs or teams. I've raced for awhile back and don't want to do that but I would love to meet some new people to ride with.

Location: Pasadena
Pace: easy to moderate (just base and have fun, no intervals).
Distance: 30-80 mile rides, if there's a century I'll jump on that too :)
Meeting: I don't mind driving to a group ride.
Type of riding: I like to keep a good pace and not stop often on a ride. Easy to me is spinning, chatting, but keeping a decent pace. A good ride and stop to eat-that sounds nice.. or just a good ride.
The longer the ride, the less concerned I am with pace...

well, I hope that covers it all! so if anyone has ideas please email me or post up and I can read up! thanks.

btw, I posted a intro in "road cycling" but I just found this section, seems a better fit.

Welcome, cruiserhead. :) I'm sure lots of rides will pop up in January and February. We'll likely have another Tuna and Bagel ride. It's 40+ miles. Don't forget too that Tour de Palm Springs is around the corner. That's a good one for someone who wants a more relaxed century. Otherwise, I'm sure someone on here will plan a ride of 50 miles or more.

The TourdePalmSpring [TdPS] is supposedly a charity ride - but after 5 minutes on their site and browsing through their pages, I couldn't find any indication of which charity are we benefiting?
How much was raised for this charity last year? Is it a different charity every year? How, exactly, does this work?

So I sent them an e-mail - besides, 5 minutes browsing a website with no indication of getting that type of information indicates poor website design/planning... I hope they make the changes :)

There is also the possibility of the "FourEcologies Metric Century" coming up in the Spring. Unsupported ride, but that one has been in the planning stages for a while now and should come together. Being organized by one of the RIDE-Arc guys. Hopefully.

EDIT: re: TdPS benefits - Nevermind, found it. At the bottom of the page.... it should be raised up higher.

^^ aren't you too young to be up this early? ;)

Yeah, I've never known what charity TDP was for, I've just ridden twice. I doubt I will ride it this year.

I didn't like the cobble-stone type roads around the 40-50 mile mark. Good way to lose a pump, saddle bag, dentures ...

There's a new years day ride up Mt. Wilson every year- there should be posts about starting time/location closer to new years. I've never done it, but it seems to be a bunch of loosely organized groups that ride a few different routes and a random number of people make it all the way up wilson, depending on the weather.

Last year I went out with a few friends and we rode up GMR to Baldy Village, and then turned around at Icehouse Rd. when the wind got to be too much.

Being in Pasadena, you don't have to drive anywhere to connect up with other people to ride with. There are group rides frequently organized on this forum that start from Encanto Park in Duarte to various destinations with anything from flat to fairly aggressive climbing. Stan's Monrovia Bike Shop on Myrtle has rides 4 mornings a week. Incycle bikes on Colorado has group rides. And several individuals on this forum ride in the foothill areas just north of, and through, Pasadena. SO . . . the only question is what days and hours are you available to ride? :)

I'm going to a NYE party in Pasadena and of course, I'll be expected to stay until midnight. I can't miss it as my friend is introducing me to a large group of single men who are her boyfriend's friends (and I do not turn such occassions down). So, if I can pull my sorry butt out of bed the next day, I'm going to this one for sure. All the more reason I'm not drinking on NYE! (Well, that and the whole driving issue. Way too many drunks on the road that night!)

Foothill Cycle Club does two Sunday AM rides starting in Pasadena--one easy and one moderate. Also a ride every Saturday, which varies in difficulty and start point. Check out their website http://www.foothillcycle.org/schedule.html. Good folks; you don't have to be a member to do the rides.

Man, finally a ride in my neck of the woods and everybody (that means you, ME) opts out. :(

I found the info regarding the charities fairly easy to find:

"Every year the Tour de Palm Springs continues to attract more and more riders. The money generated has gone to help many organizations in the Coachella Valley. In 2006 over $175,000 was donated to 75 different entities that in their own special ways met the varied needs of the people in the Coachella Valley.

"The 2008 event will continue a ten year tradition of honoring individuals who are special in the Coachella Valley.

"Review the list of organizations receiving donations. (http://www.tourdepalmsprings.com/donations.htm)

ME;

Take your bike and kit to the party.
In the morning drive or ride to Oro Vista and Foothill Bl. (Sunland)
A group will be leaving for Mt. Wilson at 9:00 AM.
The standard route is Big T to Angeles Forest to AC, Redbox, then a quick right up to Mt.Wilson.
I'll ride from home, meet a group at CSUN then ride to Oro Vista with them. It's a very effective hangover cure. Trust me.

thanks for the ideas, i'll try to make the Mt. Wilson New Year ride.
i'll look up all the things mentioned.
Montrose sat. ride is race-pace, I'll jump in that maybe in the spring at the time change.

I didn't know they had rides out of Incycle so I'll ask there too, thanks and I hope to see you guys out and around now that I will be on the bike more.

I'm not drinking on NYE. It scares me to think of driving with a drink or two in my system with other drivers out there having been drinking too. So, I'll be drinking sparkling water. I really am going to try and make this ride. I've heard about it for three years and haven't joined yet.

No I'm not. I've always been a softie. I just made the mistake of opening my mouth about that whole drinky thingy and then said the dreaded words TRUE ROADIE, but I never said I didn't like those hipster, fixie riding folks. The boys are cute. ;)

I'm not a hipster, but one of my bikes is a fixed conversion (having gone fixed just before it became 'trendy' with the hipsters). I also wear spandex when/where appropriate :)

I'm on break starting Friday, 12/21. Very available for rides from then until I go back on Jan. 7. Lots of Foothill club rides during the holiday season, but even those won't be enough if I'm to be ready for Solvang! And it'd be good to see you again!

There's a 200km brevet (http://www.pchrandos.com/Brevets/200K.html) January 12th, going from Malibu to Carpinteria and back. I'll be doing that along with the 300km brevet (http://www.pchrandos.com/Brevets/300K.html) happening in February.

I will do the Mt Wilson ride or the PCH ride from Long Beach. I'll have to wake up extra early for the LB ride so prob Mt wilson... well hope to see some of you out there!

GMR/Baldy is a good ride, I did that alot too.

Hopefully the rain will die off and I can get some miles in.

Our group leaves Oro Vista at 9:00, some racers leave at 10:00. I've done this for at least 7 years running, and the weather varies from cold to cold and windy to cold, windy, and raining. The weather will determine how far many of us go up. 2 years ago the road to Mount Wilson was covered with ice. Several years ago there was ice on part of it but many of us went up anyway. Needless to say, there were crashes on the way down as riders slipped on the ice. Last year the wind was incredible, some of the worst I've ridden in. Coming down AC the sand and dirt was blowing around and I could hear it rattling on my glasses.

Upper Big T had snow and ice on it last weekend, so that's definitely possible on Mt. Wilson unless we get a very good warming trend.
