Escondido start: We could start at a supermarket on E. Valley Parkway. This would be just west of where we would normally turn onto E.V.P from Bear Valley Parkway. This will be a minor/easy change to the route. I estimate that this would put us one hour behind.

I think the Palomar store opens at 10 on weekends, maybe 11. We don't need the store unless someone needs food. There is the well water 1/2 mile before the store (turned off on 11/15 but I'll check it before the ride) and a hose bibb behind the store. We'll be mostly descending until the Lake Henshaw store.

I suggest we stick to the original Harrah's start and decide on Wohlford Rd. later. At least until I drive out Valley Center Rd.

might as well just start from my house, at least I know the cars would be safer here then in parking lot all day off Valley Parkway. Base of Lake Wolfford is roughly 3.5 miles from my complex and there is more then enough parking out here to handle a decent group. Its all flat til the base with about 1/2 dozen lights

I think we can all hold out til the store at Henshaw plus it's cheaper then the one on top.

I'm in part way, I'll be turning around and climbing East Grade and heading back to the Harrah's unless I can finagle out of work that saturday...

Just finished printing the original routeslip and typing a new one with the Harrah's start. I'll get the mileage tomorrow.

Anybody had a problem with water on the ride? I (partially accidently) rode Highland Valley Rd/Bandy Cyn/Hwy 78 last week and ran out of water. The first store I saw wasn't until I almost joined up with E. Valley Parkway.

We've never had trouble with water on this ride, but we've also always had roaming SAG and a water stop at the end of Bandy Canyon. My suggestion regarding water is as follows:

Top off at Arco gas station in Ramona. More convenient than Circle K on original route slip since it's on the correct side of the street and it's at the intersection where we have to turn anyway. One should be able to make it to Escondido on two bottles in winter. After getting on Citrus, there is a gas station (not sure offhand what brand... one of the major brands) on the left side a little bit later. That makes for a decent location for a final stop before heading out to Lake Wohlford.

we can refill at the AM PM in Ramona before headin down Highland

There is a school at the intersection of Highland Valley Road and Archie Moore Road that has water fountains in the playground. It was open today but there have been times when the gate was locked.

Of course if it rains you can just open your mouth.

Rain will cancel the ride.

The light rain we had last night put enough snow on the ground that I turned around 2 miles from the Palomar store.

In your truck?

GP

In your truck?Yes. At about 4500 ft there was a light dusting of snow. By 5000, there was 3-6 inches and I was in low following a set of tire tracks. The truck did a couple of slides in turns so I did a 6 point turn and doubled back.

Do they make snow chains for bicycle wheels?

I got 2 blocks away from the house this morning and realized I forgot my camera.

Also, drove to Harrah's on VC Rd. It's safer to keep Lake Wohlford Rd in the route.

I think I can safely go farther on a bike. My car has summer tires on it right now, so any snow/ice would be a serious problem.

I don't think so, but they do have studded tires. Putting those on my bike is against my SoCal religion.

If there's snow at, say, 3000 feet, couldn't we climb up to that point, descend, then go up again?

(assuming it's not pouring)

We're planning this as a KOM training-ish ride, so we'd like to get the climbing in. At least most of it. We don't want to suffer (again) on the OC hills this weekend, and are really looking forward to getting out of town.

Plus, I wanna see some snow. Snow!

Snow's great on TV.

We could always do the route in reverse. By the time we get to Palomar the roads should be plowed.

jschen
01-22-08, 12:10 PM
Matt, I plan to be there if it's just showers, as currently forecasted. We may modify the route a bit if impassible on Palomar, such as heading back down to the fork and then taking the main highway to Lake Henshaw.

jschen
01-22-08, 12:10 PM
Frank's idea works, too. And gives lots of bailout options once we reach pie. And it would make an interesting change of pace for me since I've never ridden the reverse route.

I still hope to be there. What my parents really need from me is for me to attend a financial planning session with them on Sat night. So I need to be up in the LA area Sat night. I should still be able to make it down unless the session is really long (no clue how long it's scheduled to be) or they need to discuss stuff with me in further detail the next day. So mark me down as hoping to make it, but uncommitted.

Weather forecasts for Palomar continue to suck.

OTOH they predicted clouds and rain throughout the day today and it was beautiful and sunny most of the day in SD.

Reversing the route actually sounds really interesting. No problems with a late afternoon Lake Wohlford climb. No 15% grade to get in the way. Sure, the final climb (East Grade) is longer, but there's a bail-out option. I'm cool with whatever, though (assuming I make it).

mateo44
01-24-08, 01:14 PM
If it's looking rainy, we may just bail and try to get a short ride in around here. We're still in negotiations.

Damn weather.
