Getting snow stuck in your cleats?

I love riding my bike in the snow clipless, but i cant get to a safe spot to mount my bike without trudging through the snow, which then gets stuck in my cleats. Once my cleats are filled with snow I have to spend an awkward few minutes scraping snow off each show without getting any more back in when I switch feet.

any tricks/suggestions/workarounds for this?

What I usually do is tap my cleat on top of the pedal kind of hard and it breaks all the snow free allowing me to clip in. I could see problems with the closed SPD design, I have the new SPD's that are more hollowed out. But give that a try, it works for me.

yea i've tried that and it doesn't really work. what I'm looking for is something closer to a preventative measure.

honestly clips and straps may be more convenient in the winter. when iced snow gets in your cleats, it is so annoying since its hard and sticks

Spray your cleats with Pam or silicone, and the ice won't stick as easily.

I don't use my clipless in the snow.

I use the Shimano M324 pedal. Its SPD on one side and platform on the other. If its really snowy I just ride on the platforms until I can knock the snow off and clip in. Works good.

otherwise i guess its traps and straps, which are nowhere near as much fun as clipless, but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess

My SPD's run just fine all winter by periodically spraying them with a light lube like silicone, WD-40, whatever is at hand.

I experience brett_jerk's problem with my Speedplays but not my SPDs so I switched to the SPDs for the winter.

brett_jerk, what type pedals are you using? Did the PAM work?

I run ATACs on all of my mtb machines and my cyclocross bike. They have many advantages IMHO; however, their ability to offer a platform AND shed mud/snow is huge for me. :)

you mean the REAAAAAAALY old block O brass cleats?? Nope.
I had to buy new shoes my block ATACS lasted so long. Since then in a year oI'm on my third set of cleats.

i'm living real low budget (I got the cleats and pedals for free from a friend) so after some failed attempts with pam (it helped, but did not stop the problem) I went and bought a decent pair of traps/straps to replace my old junky pair. Works much better.
