Butterfield Double 2008 - New and Improved

I have no idea if I'm doing this or not, but maybe. In the meantime, since it's one of the first doubles in the year, I thought I'd get a thread up and running. Here's the link for info: http://www.planetultra.com/butterfield/index.html

EDIT: By the way, it just dawned on me that by putting "New and Improved" in the thread title, that someone might infer that last year's ride wasn't great. Not so. It was a great ride! I meant "new route!"

I'll throw myself in as a maybe. Now, the big choice is do I do Butterfield on Saturday, then drive up Sunday, to see the Prologue, or do I just skip Butterfield, and follow the tour down into SoCal the following weekend ... decisions, decisions ....

You can do it! I may ride it again. I'm so on the fence, but if I decide to do it, it will motivate me to start serious training now.

I singed up for the ride. It will be my first double. I am a bit torn up right now with Achilles problems in the left leg and ankle problems in the right leg. I'm taking the rest of the month off to recover. Which really sucks because I have a fully built, brand new, Niner waiting to be ridden. Argggg.

I also signed up for the Solvang Double as well. 2008 goal = CA Triple Crown!

And yes, the route could use some improvement, so I'm sure Deb and Brian will do a great job with the new revised Butterfield course.

Our new route is shaped like a dog bone, with loops on each end of an out-and-back course. Beginning at the La Quinta Inn, you'll head to the coast via the rolling hills of Irvine and Turtle Rock and get your first view of the Pacific Ocean as you blast down Newport Coast and hang a left on PCH. After riding through a bit of Newport Beach and Laguna Beach on PCH, you'll hang a left and head back inland, meandering up Laguna Canyon Road. Hang a right on El Toro, and make your way through Aliso Viejo and Laguna Niguel, then blast down Crown Valley to the Coast and Dana Point. From Dana Point you'll be on the coast through San Clemente, and along the bike path through San Onofre, all the way to Oceanside. From there, you'll head inland, heading towards Bonsall and lunch at the All Seasons Campground. The climbing starts again after lunch, with a beautiful loop out towards Fallbrook. You'll wind up back in Bonsall, and repeat the course back to the coast, and north through Dana Point again. The final leg is basically the reverse of the old Butterfield route: Up Ortega Highway to Antonio Parkway, across Santiago Canyon and then the mostly downhill finish on Jamboree to Portola and back to Sand Canyon. This route is a huge improvement, safety-wise! No more of that crazy traffic by the Pechanga Casino; no more drunken, bottle-throwing drivers in Lake Elsinore; and no more traffic lights on every corner through Temecula. It does remain, however, particularly urban - but in the best and safest parts of Orange and San Diego Counties. Please note that due to the urban nature of this route, it's impossible to provide checkpoint locations evenly spaced at perfect distances. That said, there are countless mini-marts and gas stations along the course where you may get water and snacks, if necessary. If you're running low, and find yourself a good distance from the next checkpoint, please stop at one of the many conveniences along the route and refuel/re-hydrate. 192 miles with about 6,900' of climbing (significantly easier than the old route!).

I don't know, we haven't even discussed it. My guess is no. We need to get the disc brakes dialed in and we haven't been riding it because of that. If anything, we'll do Hemet if we can get some miles in on it prior to that. :D

Ummm...neither of us want to give up our solo training time to ride the tandem? How's that one? :p That's actually pretty accurate. We can only ride it every other weekend because we have kids, and typically we'll decide to go get a climbing ride in instead. I'm thinking that we'll be enjoying it during the summer after we're done with most of our events.

Brandy, might I suggest that you skip Hemet. The organizers are as nice as they can be, but the route is awful. Ask Joel! He'll back me up on this.

Thanks for the head's up ME. I've heard the negatives, but it's relatively close to home and that (unfortunately) is the name of the game this year. See...maybe the tandem is the way to go on that one...if I get sick of the route, I'll just close my eyes and pretend I'm somewhere else. ;)

If they go back to the 2006 Hemet route we'll be okay.

If they have the same route as last year, and you're on that Bundy Canyon road on the 2nd loop, just closing your eyes won't do it.

You'll still be able to hear the cars and BIG TRUCKs right there (inches away, maybe millimeters away) and you'll feel the heat coming off the engines and radiators.

So, hopefully they'll go back to the 2006 route, or at the very least, won't use Bundy Canyon.

I hated that the most. I started crying on that road. I hate to admit it, but I was so tired, it was getting dark and Joel was in front of me. Not only did I feel the heat from the trucks' engines but I kept seeing them pass him so close. I had an image of him being hit and killed. :(

I didn't hate Hemet, in fact I really liked the majority of it, and esp. loved the first half of the 2nd loop. However, I did really, really hate Bundy Canyon. I haven't checked the Hemet Double website, but I certainly hope Jim does not have Bundy on the route for this year!

Hi Dante,

No, not to my knowledge. For Jackie and me, Butterfield is "local" so maybe if there is a dinner, no one told us!

Lynn Katano organizes the pre-ride dinner at Eastern Sierra, but she did the Butterfield Staff ride last weekend (Lynn, Dave Evans, Ron Hansen, John Long, that I know of) so maybe there's no pre-ride dinner for Butterfield. Plus Lynn may have ToC responsibilities this weekend.

If you hear of anything, let me know, and if I hear anything (about a dinner) I'll let you know!
