Freedom2dowhat? You can actually get sponsored by someone who advocates doing it? Does that mean you get paid to do it?

We've been asking the same question. We're not quite sure what it means yet, but we're hoping the sponsor doesn't expect us to do whatever it is at races in front of the cameras. Then again, I guess it depends on how much they're putting up.

I just talked to Gary the other day (Cutter?) I'm thinking of going back out to ride with the guys in Simi (the "social" riders - yeah right - and not the race team). After talking to him, I realized that I miss that bunch. Great guys and strong riders. I'll have to go ride the easier ride on Saturday as there is no way I can keep up with the Sunday crew.

Santa Monica’s Velo Club La Grange Wins
USA Cycling's Club of the Year

Santa Monica, CA (December 17, 2007) - USA Cycling, the governing body of American cycling, announced Friday the recipients of its annual Club of the Year awards. Santa Monica’s Velo Club La Grange (“VCLG”) was named the Division 1 Club of the Year, one of ten USA Cycling-sanctioned clubs to receive recognition for outstanding programs throughout the 2007 season. Clubs were judged on several key areas including race promotion, membership composition, instructional clinics and seminars, club activities and charitable contributions and racing performance.

In its announcement, USA Cycling said “Velo Club LaGrange Westwood exemplified a model cycling club across several categories including bicycle race promotion, the hosting of clinics and seminars, community service, programs dedicated to junior, women and master riders and much more. The club promotes the West Los Angeles Grand Prix which features a challenging course and a wide range of race categories including a full range of juniors.”

Commenting on the honor, which is the club’s first such distinction in its 39 year history, VCLG president Duncan Lemmon said, “We are honored to receive this national award and will continue to strive to improve on all its merits. Our real thanks and gratitude go out to all of our past and current members who, with their determination and efforts, have made this award possible.” Lemmon also acknowledged the club’s founder, Raymond Fouquet, “whose passion and spirit for cycling is unmatched. Raymond, this award is for you.”

Velo Club La Grange Westwood boasts 458 members including Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif.) a six-time national champion in 2007 alone. Members of the club captured a total of 37 victories this season, including 11 state championships as well as 94 podium finishes and 244 top-ten performances.

From an educational perspective, Velo Club La Grange Westwood conducted multiple clinics and seminars that focused on several key areas including development, skills, competition, nutrition and fitness. The club also held introductory track classes at the Encino Velodrome.

Velo Club La Grange Westwood also held regular weekly training rides five days a week and hosted several annual club rides – some of which doubled as charitable fundraisers. Community benefits included the Meals on Wheels Annual Thanksgiving Day Ride, the Start to Finish MS Bike Tour and the Annual Volvo City of Angels Fun Ride benefiting the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Velo Club La Grange Westwood also administers the Scott Bleifer Scholarship Fund and regularly provides volunteers for major events at the nearby ADT Event Center Velodrome. Additionally, the club donates clothing to needy cycling communities and supplies the Bicycle Kitchen with unused bike parts in order to make bicycles more accessible to all people. The club will once again be the Official Club of the Start to Finish MS Bike Tour in 2008.

About Velo Club La Grange

Velo Club La Grange is one of California's largest and oldest cycling clubs with over 400 members nationwide. The club was founded by Raymond Fouquet in 1969 and fields one of the top amateur racing teams in the U.S. Past members include a Tour de France stage winner, an Olympic gold medalist, and several U.S. National and California state champions.
Along with the Club's dedication to bicycle racing, the club welcomes new and inexperienced riders with a passion for cycling. La Grange is very active in the cycling and fitness communities. Our continuing public policy work with state and local government has led to major improvements in safety for all users of California roads. In addition, the Club has partnered with the Association of Blind Athletes and Meals on Wheels and sponsors an annual scholarship with the help of the Union Bank of California. La Grange enjoys the financial support of several corporations committed to promoting healthy and active living including Kahala Corporation. On the web at http://www.lagrange.org

Club Hypoxia - (Whose motto is Altitude or Oxygen, Pick One) This is a loosely orgainized group, much like BF-SoCal, with most of its members in Colorado, but it is open to any one who wants to join. This group loves to climb, in fact this year the did Mt. Evans twice. Mt. Evans is the highest paved road in the US, over 14,000 ft. The only requirement that they have is that everyone that joins have a willingness to have fun, enjoy bicycling with other people, and embrace the culture of bikejournal.com.

I rode with several fellow Club Hypoxians in the Tour de Tucson this year, and they are definitely a class act.

Hypoxia sounds like my kinda crazy! 14,000 feet, huh? cooool
