Happy LOLidays, and I wish you a safe and prosperous new year of flirting with paunchy old married guys on the Net.

You realize that after all that hard work of defending your character (virtual, granted), you had to blow it up and hand ME the victory by insulting both her and your fellow male BFers. I'm neither old, paunchy or married, but I could feel the sting of those words. That's a lot like what Cool Hand Luke did by continuing to run and eventually get himself killed by the man. Ol' Luke went through all that effort and pain just to end up dead.

I resent the implication that I defended my character. Prepare for a lengthy lawsuit.

But I mentioned you and Cool Hand Luke in the same sentence. That goes a long way in certain legal circles.

We'll settle, then.

Incidentally, let me just get the house rules straight. Judgmental remarks about character and blanket generalizations about social groups are permissible here, but only when ME is doing it. Otherwise, I may have to fight my way through a bunch of paunchy old married guys just to get out of the door in one piece. Have I got it right? I want to drink in this saloon; I just don't want to die in it.

Paunchy old married guys who have fought their way out a door or two, lived to tell about it and earned the right to set the rules while having a laugh at the young buck's expense. That's why it's called the wild west.

More like "fought their way into an undersized lycra jersey or two," if you ask me, but OK.

I sense a Cuckoo's Nest vs. Zubie's situation developing here.

OK, that... was funny. You appear to be thin as a rail, so you have the right to proudly point that out, even if it hurts feelings. In your own way you're helping the fitness cause by inspiring those with a few to lose.

Placid, do you feel I've judged you? I'm surprised. I actually pointed out that we both acted in similar ways (two years apart, of course, but similar nonetheless). I can't be judging you unless I judge myself, now can I? No sir, I merely disagreed with what you were doing after having done it myself. I don't think you like others disagreeing with you - which is my opinion based on your continued jabs at me. As for my making blanket generalizations about social groups, that is very definitely untrue. I've done no such thing. Nor have I attacked anyone’s character, yours included (but yet, you have attacked mine in your post below by now suggesting that I’m hitting on married men – truly a very low blow). Not agreeing with a group's tactics, social activities, time they gather, etc. and, thus, not joining them, is not in any way an effort on my part to judge or generalize anyone or a group as a whole. Again, it's a disagreement and my choosing to not join. I don't try to rally to get that group in trouble or have their activities impeded. I don't crash their gathering and try to change it to suit my own egocentric views.

In fact, I say, "live and let live." I also welcome all people from any social group on any ride I organize (I don't discriminate). Perhaps, someday even you'll come out and join on one even though, based on your behavior online on this forum, I’m not so sure I’d want to invite you at this point. You haven’t been nice or truthful, and I’m not being passive aggressive. That’s a simple observation and clear fact.

I know, ME, I know. I'm a big old meanypants, aren't I?

You take your jabs at people in ways that allow you to deny that they were jabs. This way you also get to play the victim when somebody takes a poke back at you. It's quite a nice racket, actually, if Internet drama is what gets you off.

Now can we talk about Bikes in the News? :D:)

Sure, Alice, I'll start. :)

I really enjoyed the John Burke interview. The obesity issue is the one I find so potentially compelling (as I was a fat child after I stopped riding a bike and took up other hobbies). Putting kids on bikes as early as possible would not only advance bike awareness and acceptance but serve as a tool to help them from becoming obese adults.

Also, I think I should move to Denmark. When I visited in 1999, I rode a bike all over, through small towns to Copenhagan. Very bike friendly and they have gotten it right. And who knew that Louisville, KY was bike friendly! A lot was accomplished in three years. Of course, they elected a mayor who envisioned it.

Anyway, very informative.

"He's full of crap." Such strong language from an adorable pink kittycat riding a tricycle! :D
You should let him know those poopie bike paths are unacceptable.

Kitty was mad because she was riding through, not dog crap, but human crap. And yes kitty wrote Councilperson Reyes directly with her concerns about his bike paths. She also suggested that he get on a bike and ride through some of the crap (no exactly that word) like she has. I'm sure one of his staff will respond with a "Thank you for your concern..." form letter.

Yes, but at least Kitty wrote councilperson Reyes directly and put her money where her mouth is. I like that Kitty is proactive - an example for all of us to follow who want those trails/paths improved.:)

Well, that's certainly comendable. But we cyclists can't repair cracks and holes in the pavement, broken lights, or weeds growing up through the cement! Nor can we finish the bike path through the valley so that one can actually commute via the path from Woodland Hills all the way to downtown LA! At least, this one can't.

So I was speaking to a woman named Monica Valencia. She works for Ed Reyes.
They are interested in setting up a dialogue with local cyclists to talk about ways to improve their district. Here's your chance to speak up. The meeting will probably be held in Highland Park or some other Northeast location. If you are interested in attending her email is monica.valencia@lacity.org

Hi Alice,

I was just going to write my response from Reyes office when you posted yours. Here's what was emailed to me:

Good afternoon Ms. Gray, I hope this email finds you well.

Thank you for writing Councilmember Reyes. As his Elysian Park Deputy, he has asked me to respond on his behalf.

Councilmember Reyes is extremely excited about the bike path proposal and are trying to locate specific trails/streets that we would be able to have these paths. He appreciates all input on this proposal and we will be looking into these issues at Radio Hill.

Councilmember Reyes is aware that there are issues on Radio Hill but we have been pro-actively working to clean up this once blighted area. In October, our office coordinated a three day clean up that included multiple agencies (Recreation and Park, Sanitation Department, Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority, CalTrans, CHP, LAPD, Park Rangers and Office of Public Safety). We were successful in cleaning up 10 homeless encampments on the hill, as well as trash and debris that had been dumped on the hill. Both the department of Recreation and Parks and the Office of Public Safety have been closely monitoring the hill to ensure that we do not have the same issues as in October.

We are committed to solving the issues up on Radio Hill and appreciate your commitment to your community.

May you please provide a phone number? I would like to set-up a meeting with you and Councilmember Reyes, so we can tour the hill to look at this issues you addressed in your email.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank You,

I'm definitely going to give them my phone # and invited Ed Reyes and staff for a tour of not only Radio Hill but that disgusting path that runs parallel to the 110. It's a few 100 feet from Radio Hill's entrance.

There's nothing new about this path! It has a cage around it. And when you come down off radio hill on the Amador side, look up to your left, next to the 110 and you'll see the path.
