Is there still room? I need to do a century that weekend and it sounds better than the one I was mapping out. I was going to ride from Bakersfield to Santa Margarita on Hwy. 58, there is nothing out there.

With 21 riders and counting, what are the chances of another train debacle like the one on the last Burrito century? Weren't previous TDSBs smaller than this one?

Scootcore

the others were smaller..... i suppose since the two departures are fairly close together we could be "split" between the two if it were a problem.......last time they literally loaded all the bikes into a cargo train though, so no problem there!

I don't foresee a problem. OTOH, don't ever ask me for stock advice. :D

Well, we have to get there before sundown, which means, by 5:15ishpm. If need be, one group can head back on the 6:17pm train and another group can head back on the 6:58pm train. My hope is that we will all get on the 6:17pm. But again, people need to be aware and plan accordingly - INCLUDING THE NOTION THAT YOU MAY BE SPENDING THE NIGHT IN A HOTEL IN SANTA BARBARA. No, I am not offering any services, in case some wiseguy wants to crack a joke.:p

OH, and to reiterate - if any of you who have not ridden this before and signed up are not comfortable with any aspect of this ride:

-NO SAG
-SELF supported
-May have to come back in Carpenteria
-May have to spend the night in Santa Barbara
-route can be tinkered with and there is lots of climbing - this is not an easy century
-the bikes will be stored where the train conductor says we can store them, which makes some folks nervous
-$19 train fare
-Possibly no dinner, except snacks and beer on the train

Then, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT join and then whine, *****, moan and groan about the day's events. Those who have ridden this are well aware of all factors, yet they come back because it's a great group and great route (one that was created by several of the wonderful men on here for me. I take no credit. Nor do I take credit for the company that shows. Those manly men are the entertainment!)

You pretty much have to look at this ride as if YOU are heading out your door and riding up to SB. I nor anyone else has any control over the rest of it. :)

That's a lot of pressure, Ron. I may make you have a beer with George on the train. He's far better beer company. I just drool and laugh and spit. :p

That's preposterous. When I accidentally shove you under a moving Amtrak freight car, it will not be intentional. It will also be no fault of mine that while you are flailing and trying to fight me, I lose my stranglehold and you fall beneath the wheels. And, last but not least, the fact that I kick you repeatedly on the head to ensure you are fully smashed is nothing I should be held accountable for. Kicking someone repeatedly in the head is a natural reaction in these types of traumatic circumstances.

Can I start whining now? I have to be there at what time in the morning…..6:30am and ready to go? Are we going to have to climb any hills? Do we have a tailwind all day? Will you pedal my bike for me ME?

The Amtrak back to Van Nuys, which train do I buy my ticket for….I know you’re going to tell me the Sunday morning train….a week later!

I don’t want to ride with Joel, he’s a whiner. I’ll try to be good, can I ride with you? I’ll vouch that Joel tripped and fell under the train. I might even buy you a beer. :D

m.e. seems like a great route! Anything that goes up and over both balcom and casitas, I'm game for. Is the section through the San Fernando Valley sketchy with all of the vehicular activity?

ovoleg
01-13-08, 08:31 AM
I say this ride is much easier than that Charity Ride.

There are only like 2 climbs. Santa Susana is an easy climb, I usually middle ring that thing the whole way and can pretty much hammer most of that climb(its short).

Balcom is so short you wont even know it when you see it.

The only real climb is Ojai, its pretty lengthy. Casitas is quick up and down.

This is a relatively intermediate century imo. Just dont be a noob and try to conserve energy or something, its nice scenery too!!

No, actually. There is definitely traffic but nothing too daunting that I recall. The only time I ever had an issue with the traffic was on that road that leads to Grimes Canyon. That crap was scary!
