This route was mapped very graciously by Mkadam68, tinkered with by many, and three you have it! Thank you, gentlemen! :)

Date: Saturday, February 2, 2008
Start: Amtrak Station, 7724 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91405 (parking is free on lot)
Meet: 6:30am
Roll: 7:00am SHARP - No if, buts or ors about it, be there or miss the train!
Miles: 103.43 (approximately, but expect a little more)
Elevation: 6,335+ ft. (approximately, but expect a little more)
Stops: 2-3 along the way, with a lunch at the Summit or in Casitas, please pack fuel (gels, etc.) just in case.
Level: Intermediate - http://www.bikeforums.net/showpost.php?p=5406011&postcount=2

PLEASE NOTE: THIS RIDE DOES NOT HAVE SAG VEHICLES. YOU MUST BE EXPERIENCED WITH RIDING UNSUPPORTED TO DO THIS RIDE. PLEASE KNOW YOUR LIMITS AND ABILITIES BEFORE JOINING AND BE PREPARED TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF.

Please note: Changes will be made and a new route slip provided as we near the ride. This is for reference only.

Route slip: Joel will bring on Saturday

Train Fare:$19.00 REMEMBER TO BRING ID TO BOARD THE TRAIN!

About the ride: Rain cancels. THIS RIDE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. We will make stops along the way to refuel, etc. and I will stop for a quick bite (real food) at some point. I'll try and determine actual stops along the route, but anyone wanting to join, please note that there will NOT be a SAG vehicle on this ride. It is self-support only, so please bring fuel, extra tubes, cash, etc. There will be plenty of places to stop along the way should anyone need to at any time. I will provide my cell phone to all of you at the beginning of the ride.

About the train: The Surfliner normally accommodates bikes. However, there is a risk that the bikes will have to be stored in the luggage car and/or we may have to pay additional fees ($15), but this is rare. I do want those of you coming to be aware, however, and not be shocked should that happen. There are two trains to choose from: 4:29pm departure and a 7:00pm departure (but we need to make it there before sun down, so we could end up going back in Carpenteria). Also, there are stations along the route should anyone want to come back earlier (please go to the Amtrak website for details). I'm sure most of you ride with ID, but please be sure to on this ride, as you will need it to board Amtrak.

Still Heading to Thunderdome?

+1 ... you did just fine. Beginning of the year, everyone has a fresh start, especially after the non-riding during the holidays.

As Scoot said there is a little restaurant in the Lake Casitas Recreation Area. There is also one at the top of Route 150 from Santa Paula (near mile marker 25.5) called The Summit. We have tried each.

I like the Summit because they have ice cream shakes.

Casitas is a much better view and comes just before the last climb of the day, Casitas Pass. They do have Gatorade. That should probably be our goal.

I liked this place the best. The Summit is sloowwww. By the time everyone gets their stuff, we've been sitting there for 45 minutes. The restaurant at Casitas Pass is faster and the views amazing.

And the bears...:p

Is DannoXYZ going to join us? Or maybe UMD? It would be great to have a local from SB on the ride too. Danno's modified route through downtown SB was awesome.

What's the name of it? Is it Lake Casitas Snack Bar? I don't remember seeing one, and I just looked on google maps, and the only thing I saw was Lake Casitas Snack Bar, just before the left on 150.

That sounds like the right name. Google doesn't seem to place it properly, it is inside the Lake Casitas Recreation Area, not right on Santa Ana. Its address is probably on Santa Ana though.

Great, Ovo! I hope you join! Sure, you can stay in SB. You might even get lucky with one of the hot chicas and learn about the birds and the bees. I'm all for educational experiences on my rides. :)

FYI Mary, the link to the Amtrak page is now broken. Which train schedule would we using?

Thanks! :) I'll fix it. But basically, its the Saturday night, 6:00 or 7:00pm train. My intent is to get us there in time for dinner before boarding. But, as I mentioned, we will not be doing a death march (hammerfest to the end). If we get to Carpenteria and see that daylight is dwindling, we will take the train back from there. This is something everyone should be okay with if you are doing this ride.

merider1
01-07-08, 10:59 AM
Okay, fixed the link. The two trains out are 6:17pm and 6:58pm (last one for the evening). Fare is $19.00 and everyone please remember to bring your IDs to board the train.

Last but not least, there is always a risk with this type of ride that we could be prohibited from boarding with bikes. Therefore, if you sign up for this and that happens, be prepared to either get your own hotel room, or be willing to share one with others. This is highly unlikely but a possibility nonetheless and I wouldn't want anyone angry should this occur. :)
