Southern California - To All You Losers Out There

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Don't Worry. You're not alone.
Most cool people are out partying new years eve/day.
Not us, we're all going to jeopardize our entire road racing season by riding from LA to Monterey. Long distance may not be our cup of tea, and it's certainly not in our bag of tricks, but we're gonna do it anyways.
The plan is to leave at 5am on the 31st. We'll do about 310 miles, hopefuly arriving in Monterey by 3am the next day. We're hoping it doesn't take much more than 21 hours. The only goal is to survive without hurting ourselves and ruining the upcoming season.
SOOOOO, if any other losers without any New Years plans have any desire to drive up to Monterey, hopefuly checking on us at around mile 250, and then meeting us at the hotel... you would immediatly be our BFF (Best Friend Forever). We'll pay for gas, a bed for you to crash in, etc. We just want the peace of mind knowing that someones got our backs if we all fall apart (especialy me) Cell phone reception is non-existant up in Big Sur, so I'm doing my best to find someone who's willing to support the ride.
If anyone wants to be our support, let me know. We'll love you forever (and thats something people usualy pay good money for)
Ciao

Wow, that is awesome. I would try to meet you in Monterey, but I don't have time off during xmas break. Plus, I'm working on new year's day. Anyways, have fun, but be careful out there.

That's what I was thinking. I'd love to do a ride up the coast, but doing so in the dead of Winter and with all the people getting hammered and driving home between midnight and 3am, you have a death wish!

I thought the same thing, but two of my friends attempted the ride last New Years, and they said it was completely dead up the coast. They said by the time night fell, they were already far enough North that they only saw a handfull of cars. Should be interesting.

Very true.
The best part about this ride is who we're brining along for company/moral support. Cole. That's right. The Wolfpacks favorite man with the ultra-epic-mustache is joining us. There are rumors he may even be wearing a Bearclaw kit....

Yup. That matches my experience when I lived in that area. Locals are already in-place at their party destinations; and visitors aren't on that road in the wee hours.
I would think your biggest concern would be your own level of fatigue and concentration once you hit the Big Sur section. Cars will be minimal, and you'll be on the inland side of the road, so at least no worries of falling asleep and riding off the edge. ;)
Just curious: why all the way to Monterey? Any thoughts on making Big Sur your destination instead?
Anyway. Sounds like a gutsy ride. Go for it.
P.S. You wrote:

I've always though Cole would be a great Bearclaw team member.
I still remember when Team Bearclaw showed up to part III of the series of urban races, all spandex'd out, and won. This was the race that started underneath the 4th Street Bridge, with a 5 mile circuit. My team came in 5th, I think. Not too bad, but could've been better. I was with some slower riders, sadly.

I think Big Sur is something like 250 miles from where we're starting... I've driven through there before, and I know some of those climbs are really steep and brutal. I think, at that point, the excitement and magic (for a lack of better words) of riding through Big Sur at midnight will hopefuly get us through.
Yes, Cole will be our after-ride meal. That's the only reason we're bringing (and brining) him.

I actualy wasn't at that race, I was busy working, but they were all pretty excited about the whole scene; they said it was really cool and pretty exciting with all the people. Chet raced and won the Midnight Drag race, too. We had never really heard about the Midnight Ridazz, but a friend invited us to check it out. Chet was supposed to race the next morning, so he kind of wanted to leave, but he ended up qualifying and realizing he could probably win so we all stayed and had an awesome time. Thats where they got the idea to go to the Relay Race. We were talking to "Roadblock" the other day and he told us about the Tandem race. We'll probably be there for that, it sounds look a good time.
We hang out with Cole often enough that we consider him a member of the team, but I think he's currently riding for Rapha's regional team. He's a good guy, it's gonna be great to have him along to join us in our suffering, haha.

...still curious why you guys are making Monterey the destination, rather than just ending it in Big Sur?...

Haha, good question? I have no idea, I guess they just figure if you're gonna kill yourself, you might as well do it right? I think after the 250 mile mark, it's all the same? We'll find out soon enough, haha.

Dude, with the word "Loser" in the thread title, you shouldn't have even clicked on it.
I was thinking, maybe you can be our support vehicle, but with a twist. Ride you bike towing a trailer with all the stuff we'll need in Monterey? You can ride to Monterey, have a beer, and then ride back to check on us. You in?

Nah, his posts are probably some of the best here, now that I realize they're all in good nature.
If his sense of humor is the same in person, we'll get along well.
OVO- How much is this pro package gonna cost me? Does it include an autograph?

Enzo, ovo has been around longer than I have, and I've always liked his posts. I'm actually teasing him in my post below as he did use to have a stalker himself on here. Yes, ovo is the same in person only a little more shy. ;)
