Recumbent - Transporting a Recumbent

Are there specially made car racks to transport recumbents, or does that capability vary with specific models? Thinking about buying a recumbent, but dont want to buy a pick up truck to haul it.

It depends on which model recumbent you get. A lot of recumbents will go on a 2-arm hitch rack or one with wheel trays and/or fork mounts. Long wheelbase models might require a tandem tray.

Look on Ebay.They advertise one for one trike or two bikes.As was stated depends on what you are getting.If there is a will there is a way.I know if I had to my EZ Sport would work on my regular rack with a little longer square tubes for the wheel mounts that could be done easy.

Right, depends on the bike. My CLWB Tailwind fits on an old Graber rack on the back of a Ford Escort Wagon. Double 20" wheels help that happen.

Now, for mandrel-bent monotube frames like my Baron or a StreetMachine, for instance, you'd want something with a fork mount or a wheel tray, and make sure the tray was long enough for the wheelbase. Poorformance Bike ;) sells one that looks a lot like the old Sportworks racks, with wheel wells, that looks like it would work well, too.

Like BP said, you can haul some bents on a tray type rack. I've hauled a V-Rex, Volae Team, Bacchetta Corsa and Aero, Baron, Fujin and Velokraft VK2 on this Sportsworks rack:

I found a used Draftmaster and added the specialty rail to transport my EZ Sport CX. Works great. Check out www. atoc.com

Here's our tandem trike on the car.

And here we are, riding the tandem. 2 kids in trailer. (which gets folded up in the trunk for transporting)

The same Hollywood folding trunk rack will also fit my single trike and my Hurricane. At the same time.
Or any combination of up to 3 bicycles, DF or recumbent.
I also use the rack to haul plywood, an upright freezer, furniture, ladders, you name it.
Pretty solid & versatile unit, if you ask me.
It's what makes my Accord into a pickup truck! :D

Has anybody tried carrying a Bacchetta Gyro 20 (the Bacchetta with the smaller front wheel) in a Subaru Outback? I've been riding a Tour Easy and love it, but transporting it is getting really old so I'm looking for a short wheelbase bike that I can carry with the same ease as a diamond frame (pop off the front wheel and toss it in the back of my car). Any suggestions would be most welcome.

The Performance Bike Xsport racks are made for them by Hollywood. You can buy longer arms for longer wheelbase bikes.

I transport my Giro on a two arm trunk mounted Thule and have taken it 200 miles on that. I use a draft master on my van for the Rans Screamer.

I use a Saris Bones 2 carrier to carry my Bacchetta Giro 20. The only problem is that I find that I have to remove the seat. This is for two reasons; to avoid battering the seat back with the wind buffeting, and because the seat mount( for me at least) is right where I need to attach the one of the straps. I point the handlebars forward and lean them forward and loop a bungee cord around them, around the frame and hook it to the rack. After loading the bike on it, then I retighten the straps holding the carrier to the car to account for the loading that the bicycle does. Then it rides jiggle free.

Hey Artkansas - why do you remove the seat? I use my Thule trunk mount, and although it's not as pretty as your Saris, it's similar in style. I put the right arm (as I look from the rear) below and behind the seat and the other arm is just in front that chain guide wheel thing. Essentially, I'm just balancing the bike so that it doesn't wobble. I do rotate the handlebars back towards the car and bungee chord it. I find that if I make moving the bike too complicated, I will not go on as many rides.

If you are talking to me, my rack was built in 2002 and the company has been bought a couple times since then and the rack has been redesigned a few times. I have no idea what company owns them now and if their current racks work.

I use a Xport Flatbed 2 bike hitch rack from Performance Bike.It uses the wheel hoops to hold the bike, and is really a stable rack for a 1 1/4 tube rack. Good value for the price.
It works great for my Burley Hepcat (swb), and I have also carried a lwb Burley on it successfully.
