I hurt this morning.

Last night on my way home, I ended up taking Alaskan Way all the way from downtown Seattle to Boeing Field because Burlington Northern was playing with their trains and screwing up traffic for those of us who have to cross their tracks. Normally this isn't a route I like because it puts me on highway 99, which is a 45 MPH road with no shoulder to ride on. But, I've got lots of lights and reflectors and I'm usually OK as long as I stay pretty far right.

Last night was the ride from he**. I got down past the end of the viaduct and onto 99 proper without too much trouble, so I actually thought I was doing fine. Then I hit the train tracks that cross 99. These aren't tracks that go straight across; they go across at an angle. In dry weather this isn't a big deal. Last night wasn't dry. I tried to angle the bike to cross them at 90 degrees, but I guess I got it wrong because I ended up spilling in a lane where the traffic was going 50+ mph beside me. I didn't get hit, but I did have some pain in my left leg and elbow. No matter; as quickly as I could, I popped up from the lane and got off the road to check myself and the bike out. Nothing appeared broken, so I got back on the bike and started riding again.

About half a mile later, the same thing happened again! I spilled onto the road while trying to cross a train track. Now I'm in much more pain and really getting p*ssed off! Still, I check myself and the bike and, finding nothing obviously broken, continued the ride.

Long story short is that I have reasonably bad road rash up and down the entire left side of my body, with particular emphasis on my left elbow and knee. In addition, my shoulder was apparently deeply bruised and I can't lift my arm over my head without some reasonably serious pain. I decided that since this was the last day before the Christmas break, I'd go ahead and drive in today.

The good news is that my rain gear is apparently really tough. Two spills onto the road and all it got was a small rip in the left knee. I was impressed! My SmartWool base layer has some rips in it, and my skin certainly has some new coloration, but at least the rain gear kept the road debris from getting into the wounds!

Way to end the year, eh?

Happy Solstice all!

Oh man, that does not sound like a happy way to end the year :( .

I am really glad to hear that you did not have worse happen to you--I'd be scared to death of having something like that happen to me on 99  .

I take it that the bike survived as well? Aren't you glad you have a few days to recuperate?

As far as I know, the bike's in much better condition than I. I was actually planning to ride in this morning until I took a step and fell back on the bed. I don't think my wife appreciated my language.

We've all had spills like this, I know. Part of the game. Life's a beach.

Happy Holidays East Hill! Remember to be careful out there :)

She probably just didn't like being woken up that way ;) .

I've not had anything quite that bad happen to me, and I'm hoping it stays that way!

I know I am really cautious on train tracks and anything metal for that reason.

Anyway, Happy Holidays to you too, and remember that the days are finally getting longer :D .

Hope you're feeling better.

I ran into snow/ice on the street last night on my ride home; I was shocked because it was so sunny during the day. I crunched through the snow without seeing it and was so shocked I stopped the bike (but didn't fall).

This morning, streets in my neighborhood were coated with scary black ice, so I waited to leave until dawn. Off & on issues w/ice all the way in; I saw a rider go down on the MUP along I-90 just East of the Mt. Baker Tunnel. Stopped to help, he wasn't hurt, but another rider in my office banged up his knee pretty badly coming in today.

Makes riding in the rain seem like fun!

It's funny, I hadn't realised it until I went out later this morning, but apparently there must have been ice on the trail when I rode home. I thought the wheel noise sounded a bit odd!

There was a lot of ice on Big Soos Creek, plus odd bits of fluffy white stuff every once in a while  . I'm surprised I didn't wipe out this morning.

Looks as if I was luckier than unixpro :o .

unixpro - I took the same spill this year on a rainy spring day over tracks that were not perpindicular to the roadway. I put a nice dent in my helmet, and banged my face, shoulder and knee. I have ever since unclipped and tiptoed over tracks when they are wet. Tough way to learn!

If there's one single thing that I've learned from being here on BF, it's this:

Approach train tracks at a perpendicular angle always!

There's that one section of Interurban between 405 and South 196th where the tracks cross at an angle, and I go out of my way to cross them in a perpendicular fashion.

Ouch Ouch Ouch is all I can say, guys :( .

On black ice days (foggy or misty nights, cold mornings), also be cautious of:

1. Any painted lines at crosswalks.
2. Any other metal you have to ride on, such as grates.

Both were super-slippery today.

Wet rails are bad news, I've never lost it on them but they make me more than a little nervous. One thing I do know is that you wouldn't catch me on the viaduct. You're a brave soul ;)

Ouch, take it easy out there in the rain.

+1 This morning....oh ouch, it hurts to sit down. The first 10 miles today were frosty, until I got to Bellevue. maybe it's time to try a pair of studded tires, but I'm wondering how much time I'll lose on a commute...

Hope you're feeling better.
