Commuting - What's your commute distance?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Wondering what everyones normal commute distance is.

Mine's 7 miles each way, but I wish it were a bit further.:)
I live 4 miles from the office, but Monday-Thursday I have a 20-25 mile training ride before work. I guess if I lived 17 miles from work, it'd pretty much work out the same.

Got three different commutes, based on what's up at work (and where).
1.2 miles - usually walk
4.9 miles - often take the scenic route home or ride at lunch
17 miles - my favorite one. The ride home seems to turn into a time trial.
Oh, and distances are one way.

I think 45-60 minutes each way is an excellent commute. It's similar to the amount of time most people spend traveling to work, whatever their means of transport.

Mine is currently a 26km round trip. My last job's commute required a 48km round trip. I now get up at 4am and do extra riding a couple of times/week to make up for those lost kilometres.
I've got a 13.5 mi. AM commute and a 17.5 PM return trip. It takes me between 2.0 - 2.25 hrs R/T.
13 miles each way. Roughly 2 hours R/T depending on traffic lights.
Mine is 18.5 miles each way, just about perfect in the spring, summer and fall but it can be a character builder in the winter.

Mine is 22 miles each way. It's all on paved bike path except for 7 or 8 downtown city blocks.

Mine is 15.5 miles each way. It takes just under 2hrs round
trip. Once winter really hits I don't think I will be able to do
the commute.

I'm about 9.3 miles if I take the mountain bike trails or about 10.2 miles if I take the roads so it's about a 19 mile round trip for me, mostly flat except for the small hill I live on. Takes about 35-50 minutes depending if I'm on the road or on the trail. I commute on a mountain bike with semislicks because of the trail aspect.
Jay
I have a 10 mile one way commute which is a mile longer if I take the alternate route that has less traffic. I spend about 45 min. to an hour depending on which bike I use-3 speed or 10 speed. I am thinking of getting a mountain bike for the winter which may up the run time a little. I find 10 miles just the right distance for a good workout in the morning and a nice wind down in the evening. Even though I walk 2.5 miles during my lunch break,I still have enough energy for mowing the lawn and walking the dog at night.

My route in is 12.38 miles and the route home is 11.5. Nice mostly flat commute.
Hi there,
My commute is about 40 km each. More than 3 days in a row is pushing it for me.
Mike
My commute is only 3.5 miles one way, but on the return trip I do a loop route which increases the overall round trip to ten miles (plus I do a moderately fast paced ride of about 45 minutes during lunch three days a week). So my normal commute regimen is ten miles for the round trip. My guess is I'd still commute every day if my distance increased to as much as 10 miles one way, but past that I'd probably begin riding my bike to the train station, and taking the train in.
My round trip distance is 10 miles(16 km). Some sections of the route are not plowed in the winter, so I use a slightly longer, 11-12 mile round trip when there is a lot of snow around.
At some distance beyond what I am now doing, it would be necessary to change clothing and shower. That would make driving more convenient than riding, although I might keep riding just for the health benefits. I suspect that:
>3 mile one way -- excessive wear on car as it never warms up, slower than bike, crazy to even cionsider driving unless heavy loads, multiple destinations.
3-6 mile one way-- bike may be slower than driving except in bad weather, but money savings, excercise benefits, personal satisfaction compensate for this.

4 - 36 miles. The former using a train for some of the route the latter taking rather circuitous routes. Generally 12-13 miles each way.
14 miles each way. About 40-45 minutes in and 50-55 to get home.

depending on which route I take home either 17.5 miles on 20 miles round trip
the route in is always 10 miles but usually in the evenings I'm trying to get home as quickly as possible so I take a slightly more direct route
The round trip is about 12.5 miles / 20 km.

roundtrip abt 4miles
yeah, yeah I know that is very short, but I bike it everyday to and from work and it not only saves me on gas, also a parking decal (almost $100 for a year)
so after work I go home and change and get on my road bike b/c the ride home is a great warm-up ride, then I am off for my real ride
My commute is 12.4 miles each way... I think that anything under 1 hour is a terrific commute year round. It makes me happy that I'm exercising about 1.5 hours a day without chewing up any time. And being outside instead of riding in a little metal box makes working in an office bareable.

20 miles one way, I usually hitch a ride home but as winter approaches may do both ways on some days.

20 miles each way during summer months; 13 miles each way during winter months. In fall and spring I'll mix-and-match. 1h15m for the 20-miler and about 40m for the 13-miler.
City streets mostly, 'burbs and light industrial otherwise.

About 10 miles each way. Terrain varies from flat to rolling. Almost all urban/suburban, busy streets. Not very pleasant, but efficent. Takes about 45-55 minutes, depending on traffic.

15,5 kms one way. Mostly paved bike path, some 4 kms of it along beautiful seashore. I love it!

4 miles each way, almost all on a gorgeous bike path running along the potomac river. 30 min r/t on my fixed gear.
My commute is pretty much 5 miles each way. I can shave off a half mile if I absolutely have to but I dislike that route, and it doesn't save enough time on those late days to make much difference. In the summer I'm often taking longer routes, but keeping it pretty close to the comfortable min in the cold rain and snow.
I'm planning on moving when the work slows down, and I think I'd like a commute more in the 7-10 mile range. That for the most part is my main criteria on a new place to live :)

2 kilometers and I'm in center-city. Blowing past most red lights and Anne Frank's house, that takes a good 10 minutes.
I commute year round by bike but the commute is only 3 miles one way. I add distance during lunch during the spring/summer/fall with coworkers. This winter I plan on riding in all weather during my scheduled workout days.

16 kms / 10 miles one way
Mostly downhill on the way in...
Mostly uphill on the way home...
:D
Also have an alternate route via cycle path (about 22kms) along river and park but the risk of murdering bush turkeys and other wildlife (including walkers with walkmans) keeps me to the road...

37 km round trip, or 18.5 each way
that's 23/11.5 for folks back home.
cheers,
Tom
P.S. wish it was longer...

About 12 miles each way. 500ft rise on the way there, but a few nice downhills on the way home.
Mostly on quieter roads, with the odd busy intersection and a couple of stints on bike paths.

if i really need to get rush home or to work, it's 12 miles. otherwise, i make it 20 miles both ways with some good hills on the way, both to avoid traffic and to have some fun!

I live 7 miles from work, but on the way home i take the long route.
45km one way with 480m/1574f of climbing to work. If I ride home (not very often) it is 780m/2558f of climbing.
CHEERS.

i think i have you all beat for longest and shortest..
before yesterday the only job i have is once every 2 or 3 weeks.. the commute is about 120 miles there, and i can squeeze it down to 70 back if i want, but that road is more dangerous.. it takes about 3 loaded days up and 2 back. (2500ft elevation gain).
the job i got yesterday is about 200 feet away. i don't ride my bike there.
kim
When I was working it was 14.3 miles each way. :)
Now that I'm home (going nuts trying to find a job) it's about 30 feet (to the computer). If it's laundry day then it's about 50 feet to the washing machine.
But I go riding nearly every day (30-40 miles).
If you look out your office window around noon you'll see me riding through the office park on my way to Stone Mountain Park. :D
4.5 to the closest train station (I ride to this one most mornings), 6.5 to the next one (I ride home from this one). From train to work 1.5. So total I do about 14 miles a day. Mon, Wed, Fri I ride at lunch and after work, and I do long rides on the weekends.

My Trip Is Only 4.8 Miles One Way.but Depending On What Shift I Work And How I Feel It Can Be Between 13 To 25 Miles.
Mine depends on the route. The short route is 50 miles R/T the long way is 70 miles R/T. I only do it on Fridays because it's a casual dress day. Thur. I bring some clothes and items to clean up with and leave in my office. I loved it when I first came to work here and my staff and co-workers knew I lived 35 miles from the office. The look on there face when they realized I rode my bike to work.

And image what the co-workers are saying over the pizza pie at work about you. ;)
Mine's 12.5 miles each way. Shortest route, anyway. I up it occasionally. :)
