I heard there is a ride that goes on PCH on January 1st. Does anyone have any more information on it?

Thanks.

It is!!! Very fast group, you will be pulled along in the peloton at 24-30 MPH with little effort...

I'll be doing the Mt Wilson ride, which I'm told has quite a large turnout, as well.

Mt wilson is way better, though not quite as large a group. PCH is definitely an easier ride.

It's fun, but only needs to be done once. It's not the safest group, and I think I'd prefer to do a long ride with a few bros.

Hi,

I wrote about this ride last year. I guess it's worth doing once but it is far from safe and some of the local constables have a grudge about the ride which doesn't help.

Is Wilson in the San Diego area? Or am I getting my Mt's confused?

In the Pasadena area, in case he doesn't know the roads yet.

here is a listing of the group rides - PCH is at the bottom

I plan on doing Mt Wilson b/c it's closer but PCH looks fun too.

I did that a long time ago, and it was a huge, friggin' huge pack, but there was a big pile up down by Laguna. If you do go, be very careful, and try to get either way up in front, and trail behind in back.

Mark, if you decide to do the Wilson ride, you could start at CSUN with some of the guys, or drive to Sunland and meet at Oro Vista at 9:00. The route is up Big T to Angeles Forest to Angeles Crest. From there people decide whether to go down to Foothill or up to Red Box and maybe on up to Wilson, depending on the weather. The racers start up Big T at 10:00, or so. I like to stay out of their way.
There is a group that starts in Van Nuys, too.
I've done this ride when there were 200 riders.

I've done this ride when there were 200 riders.Wouldn't miss this one but since this will be my first ride in almost 3 weeks, I'll start in Glendale and go up AC to Wilson. It's a little easier with a much smaller chance of a howling wind. This ride is a good chance to try out all the winter gear I got for Xmas.Expect it to be in the low 30's on the Wilson road . It's on the north side of the mountain, brrrrrrrrrrr. This ride is as close a I come to a Polar Bear Club event.:p

The annual Orange County California New Years Day Critical Mass ride starts on Jan 1st at 8AM in Long Beach. It is approx 100 Miles heading south on PCH to Dana Point, then inland through south Orange County. It heads through Irvine and Newport Beach before hitting PCH for the last 20 miles. This ride is attended by various ******bags.

Judging by the photo, I'll pass on the PCH one.

I wouldn't call the PCH ride a critical mass ride at all. It's typically a bunch of racers, ex-racers, wannabe racers, and friends of racers. The people at the front are trying to drop everyone else.

If you do it, watch out after Corona Del Mar. The crashes usually occur on the rollies going into Laguna Beach. Once you hit downtown Laguna Beach it pretty much breaks up into small packs.

I'd like to ride up AC Hwy instead of Big T, too. I'm getting over a back injury and I'm not sure I'm up for Big T. I rode Piuma yesterday and it's still not completely healed, but I really want to do the New Year's Day ride!

I think Tujunga is easier than AC, slightly. Both are a kick in the pants and beautiful though. :) Oh, and yes, John, I concur - better.

I've never been good at math ;) But the way I look at it:

Riding up AC Hwy, it's 8 miles to Clear Creek. The bottom portion is steep 9-10% (maybe for 1/2 mile?) then it's ~4-6% grades the rest of the way and then it levels off for 1/2 mile before you get to Clear Creek.

Riding up Big T to Clear Creek: Big T is a 9-mile climb and if I recall, the last mile is 9-10% grades (but it's been awhile since I've ridden Big T). Then you turn right on Angeles Forest Hwy and you would have another ~4 miles climb to Clear Creek. I don't remember the grades on that portion and I'm not certain as to the mileage on Angeles Forest Hwy.

There is definitely more traffic on AC Hwy compared to Big T, but once you turn onto Angeles Forest Hwy, you get traffic again.

Then from Clear Creek you ride to Red Box and then to Mt. Wilson, so it's the bottom portion that's different. Normally I would go for Big T, but my back muscles haven't healed completely so I think I need to go the less climbing route. I plan to do more climbing tomorrow (Sat) and see how my back holds up. That will tell me if I'm ready for AC on 1/1 and which route I should try.

big john
12-28-07, 12:23 PM
The question is, where would you start? If you drive to the bottom of AC, that's one thing, but if you start at CSUN, you have to climb Foothill both ways to get to AC. In either case, I hope to see you up there and I hope your back gets better fast.

Enzo Gucci

I think that Big T and Clear Creek are about the same. If you can do one, you can do the other. I love both of them.

Big T is a mix of rollers, false flats and a shorter climb near the end. They're both great.

EDIT: Oops, meant Angeles Crest to Clear Creek

Hey you! I realized that I did not sponsor you as I promised I would for MS. :( I forgot. I hope to see you Tuesday, and you can shove me off my bike. :p

By the way, are we taking Big T up or AC? I guess I'd better figure out where people are meeting and what the route is.

Thanks, John. :) After my ride tomorrow, I'll know how much climbing I can do. I really miss not riding very much the last 5 weeks. I would either start at the bottom of AC or if I ride Big T, I would start at Oro Vista & Foothill. And how's your back after your mtb crash? Last time I saw you, you were hurting. I hope it's all healed by now. And I really hope to see you all on AC.

I will be at Oro Vista and Foothill at 9:00, I may ride there from home, which is what I usually do. The people starting at CSUN will be starting at 8:00, or a little before. I have to be somewhere in the afternoon, so I probably won't go up to Mount Wilson.

Okay, well I'll meet you at 9am then. I doubt I can make it up to Wilson anyway, so I'm fine. Or, if I really want to go up there, I'll head up on my own (there will be others out there I'm sure). I may ride up to Oro Vista and Foothill from Sherman Oaks.

How would I get to Oro Vista and Foothill from Thousand Oaks?
I may do this ride, but not 100% sure as it sounds like it will be COLD and I am such a wimp in the cold.

Thanks!

Those doing the Mt Wilson ride, are you a little tentative given the wind situation? I don't mind the cold, but add in 30+mph wind gusts, and it starts to look slightly less fun. :o

Karen,
Its off the 210 and Sunland
So 23 to 118 to 210 seems simplest - exit sunland

Do it anyways! That's half the fun on rides like that. Everyone getting together for a kick in the ass.

It's a twisty climb, so a lot of the time (or at least some of the time) you'll be sheltered from the wind.

Yea, I'm sure I'll be out there. Climbing is never cold... and I guess I'll just double up on my gear for the descent. Two weeks of hacking up phlegm isn't instilling much confidence, though!

M.E. -- if for no other reason, I need to do it so that I don't start getting lumped in with the south bay posers club.

In either case, I hope to see you up there and I hope your back gets better fast. I'm gonna start on Glenoaks near Brand in Glendale at 8:30. Probably get to AC and Foothill about 9ish. AC is definitly easier than Big T and much more sheltered from the wind. Remember last year?:) I may take the easier route but I have always gone all the way to Wilson unlike many. Hope to see you guys up there.
